Pennsylvania is new to legal sports gambling, but it didn’t take long to make headlines.
The state’s first online sportsbook, SugarHouse Casino, opened on May 28 to the tune of a $573,163 handle in just three days. That’s according to figures released by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board this week.
That’s more than $191,000 per day, which nearly eclipsed the daily average for SugarHouse’s brick and mortar location.
It’s worth noting the good timing for the opening week, squarely in the middle of the Stanley Cup Finals and just prior to Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Still, that’s an impressive opening for the online service.
More online books are reportedly coming to Pennsylvania this summer, which means the amount wagered online in the Keystone State is about to rise.
For instance, New Jersey’s online handle was 82.6 percent of all money wagered in the month of May. With just three days on the calendar, Pennsylvania’s online contributions represented just 1.6 percent of the $35,361,052 bet in May.
Another obstacle that could be out of the way soon: Bettors are currently only able to download the SugarHouse app on Android devices.
Expect more big numbers for the month of June when those are released, as the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Finals didn’t finish up until the middle of the month.
