Atlanta (44-44 straight up, 38-49 against the spread) staved off elimination last night at Boston, winning 119-117 as a 14-point road underdog behind Trae Young’s late fourth quarter heroics.

The Hawks, who won outright as +650 money-line underdogs at BetMGM, got 14 consecutive points out of Young to end Game 5 and force a Game 6 back in Atlanta on Thursday.

Trailing by one with 7.3 seconds left and inbounding at midcourt, Young was thrown the ball in the backcourt where he could get his momentum off the dribble attacking. With Jaylen Brown playing off him somewhat anticipating a dribble drive into the paint, Young sensed enough separation to fire away and did just that after a quick step-back move. His jumper caught all nylon to put Atlanta in front by two with 1.8 ticks remaining.

Boston (60-27 SU, 48-38-1 ATS) allowed a 12-point lead with 5:15 left to get away. Atlanta countered with a 12-0 run that was capped by a tying trey from Young, who finished with 38 points, 13 assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals.

After pulling even on Young’s 3-ball with 2:40 remaining, the Celtics went back ahead on a bucket by Robert Williams. On Atlanta’s next possession, Young drew a foul and Jayson Tatum was issued a technical foul.

Young took advantage by hitting three straight free throws for a one-point advantage. Williams dunked an alley-oop pass from Tatum with 25.1 seconds left to put the Celtics back up by one, 115-114.

Then Marcus Smart committed a knucklehead foul on Young 45 feet away from the basket while Boston was in the penalty with 15.1 ticks remaining. Young made both free throws for a 116-115 Atlanta lead.

With 7.1 seconds remaining, Boston’s Derrick White drew a foul on Young. He hit both go-ahead free throws, but it wasn’t enough.

Young was obviously the hero for the Hawks, but John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic had outstanding performances, too. Collins had 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field and 4-of-9 makes from 3-point range.

‘Bogi’ scored eight of his 18 points in the final stanza. He also had six rebounds, two blocked shots, one steal and five assists without a turnover. Bogdanovic buried 6-of-9 FGAs and 3-of-6 from downtown.

De’Andre Hunter and Saddiq Bey were also in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Brown scored a team-best 35 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists for the C’s, who are 3-11 SU in their last 14 postseason games at Atlanta.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, teams down by 13 points in the final six minutes of regulation when facing elimination in the last 25 seasons of the NBA Playoffs had lost 183 consecutive games. Well, all streaks are meant to be broken, and that one came to an abrupt end last night.

As of early this morning, most books had Boston installed as a six-point favorite for Thursday’s Game 6 at State Farm Arena. The total was 232.5 points and Atlanta was +190 on the money line.

Dejounte Murray will be back in the starting lineup for the Hawks after serving a one-game suspension in Game 5.

FanDuel has updated its series price, listing Boston as a -2500 ‘chalk with the Hawks as +1200 underdogs. The Celtics have -250 odds to win the series in six games and are +220 to win in seven games.
