Atlanta is the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference, clinching that spot with a 116-105 win at Miami in Tuesday’s play-in tournament game. The Hawks won outright as five-point underdogs, hooking up money-line supporters with a +200 payout at DraftKings.

Miami’s Jimmy Butler scored the first bucket of the game. Atlanta missed its first four field-goal attempts until John Collins drained a 3-pointer with 10:19 left in the first quarter. The Hawks never trailed again.

They led 63-39 with 2:37 remaining in the first half. However, the Heat went on an 11-2 run before halftime. Then early in the third quarter, Tyler Herro’s 10-footer cut Atlanta’s lead to 67-60.

Miami would get to within five midway through the third quarter, only to miss seven of their next eight field-goal attempts. Atlanta ended the third quarter on an 18-10 surge to go up 91-78.

Erik Spoelstra’s squad had one more run left in it. Kyle Lowry, who finished with 33 points, four rebounds and five assists without a turnover, buried a trey to trim the deficit to 97-91 with 7:40 left.

After an Atlanta timeout, its next five points came off offensive rebounds. That was the story of the night. The Hawks murdered Miami on the boards by a 63-39 margin, killing the Heat with 22 rebounds off the offensive glass.

When Miami cut Atlanta’s advantage to nine with 3:47 left, Collins rebounded Saddiq Bey’s miss and, as he was falling out of bounds on the baseline, found Bey with a sweet bounce pass for an easy dunk.

Miami’s Tyler Herro scored to get the deficit down to nine again. Then Trae Young missed a 3-pointer, but Clint Capela gathered his eighth offensive rebound of the night.

Eighteen seconds later, Dejounte Murray’s eight-foot jumper inserted the dagger. Murray finished with 18 points, six assists, five rebounds and one blocked shot.

Young scored 25 points to go with eight rebounds and seven assists. Bey had 17 points and six boards, while Bogdan Bogdanovic produced 14 points, two rebounds, two steals and two assists without a turnover.

Onyeka Okongwu finished with 12 points, four blocked shots, four rebounds and three assists without a turnover. In just 14 minutes off the bench, Jalen Johnson added 10 points, seven boards, three assists and three steals, and Collins tallied 10 points, four rebounds and two assists without a turnover.

Finally, Capela had four points, 21 rebounds and a pair of blocks.

One day after a national NBA Insider reported that Hawks ownership has given the front office permission to make any offseason moves it wants, including trading the franchise player in Young – who led this club to a shocking run to the Eastern Conference finals at this time two years ago – they played one of their best games of the season.

Whether Atlanta can carry this momentum into its next series against Boston certainly remains to be seen. It’s going to be a tall task.

For Saturday’s Game 1 at 3:30 p.m. Eastern, the Celtics have been installed as eight-point home favorites. The total is 230.5 points and the Hawks are +300 on the money line.
