LSU quarterback Joe Burrow likely had his ‘Heisman Moment’ against Alabama on Saturday.
With the Crimson Tide seemingly riding a wave of momentum into the fourth quarter, Burrow led the Tigers’ offense on back-to-back touchdown drives at crunch time. ‘Bama had made it a one-possession game twice, only to see its hopes dashed by Burrow as he almost surely clinched the Heisman Trophy in the process.
On Monday, the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas posted updated Heisman Trophy odds. Burrow is listed as a heavy 1/10 ‘chalk — a drastic line move from his previous mark of +115.
However, drastic doesn’t begin to describe the odds journey that Burrow’s Heisman chances have been on, as he opened the season at 200/1. Just a few days ago, I touched on a Burrow ticket that was available for sale at PropSwap.
Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is now slated at 8/1 to win the award. The Buckeyes are undefeated and appear to be a lock to make the College Football Playoffs. Fields has thrown for 1,859 yards with a stellar 27/1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The transfer from Georgia also has 347 rushing yards and 10 TDs.
Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who appeared to still be hampered by an ankle injury in Saturday’s loss to LSU, is 10/1 following the Crimson Tide’s first blemish of the season. He threw for 418 yards and four touchdowns in the loss. Tagovailoa has thrown for 2,584 yards and 31 TDs.
Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts is also listed at 10/1. He has passed for 2,742 yards and 24 touchdowns on the season. Hurts also leads the Sooners in rushing with 869 yards and 15 touchdowns. Oklahoma quarterbacks have won the previous two Heisman Trophies (Baker Mayfield/Kyler Murray).
Burrow’s stats match his moxie. He has thrown for 3,198 yards and 33 touchdowns. Surprisingly, it was Burrow’s legs that came up big on Saturday, as he calmly ran for several key first downs late in the game. He has 189 rushing yards and three touchdowns this season.
The Heisman Trophy announcement will be on Dec. 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
