Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest Tuesday morning on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault of an unborn child.
Young is a transfer from Miami who played two seasons for the Hurricanes. In his first five games at UGA this year, he has 11 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns.
Young had three receptions for 57 yards in a 41-34 loss at Alabama two weeks ago. He caught three balls for 51 yards in this past Saturday’s 31-13 home win over Auburn.
In 2023 at Miami, Young had 47 receptions for 563 yards and five TDs. As a freshman in 2022, he had 32 catches for 376 yards and two TDs.
According to the police report, a 20-year-old woman that described herself as Young’s ex-girlfriend told authorities she went to his residence at midnight to discuss their relationship.
When the conversation became intense, the complainant said Young “grabbed her left arm near her biceps and triceps and physically pulled her out of his room.”
After Young went back inside and locked her out, the woman told officers her phone started ringing. After answering the call from a friend, the woman told police, “Mr. Young came out and grabbed her from behind. She said that he picked her up and began to squeeze her torso and abdomen very hard. She said she felt like [Young] was trying to harm her.”
Young’s lawyer Kim Stephens told ESPN, “Colbie Young was arrested last night after he asked his ex-girlfriend to leave his apartment. He did not make physical contact with her in any way that could ever be considered a crime. I expect Mr. Young to be fully exonerated once our investigation is complete and the truth revealed.”
UGA head coach Kirby Smart announced the suspension on the SEC Coaches Teleconference this morning.
“I got to speak to [Young] this morning,” Smart said. “He’s been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter has resolved. We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it but had a good meeting with him this morning.”
Georgia (4-1 straight up, 1-4 against the spread) has a 2-1 SEC record going into Saturday’s home game vs. Mississippi St. As of early Wednesday afternoon, most books had UGA installed as a 34-point favorite with a total of 53.5.
