DeMarcus Cousins’ surprising return from a torn quad has suddenly become vitally important to the Warriors’ NBA title chances.

That’s because center Kevon Looney is likely to miss the remainer of the Finals “with a fracture of the first costal cartilage on the right side of his rib cage,” according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Warriors say Looney will be “out indefinitely,” which is a big blow to their frontcourt depth. Looney was critical in the Western Conference Finals, averaging 10 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

With Looney out, the Warriors will need more performances like the one they got from Cousins in Game 2. He scored 11 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out six assists while playing passable defense in a 109-104 victory in Toronto.

As a result, the Warriors are six-point favorites in Game 3 despite the numerous injuries they are dealing with.

Guard Klay Thompson exited Game 2 with hamstring tightness and is listed as questionable for Game 3. Kevin Durant remains out with a strained calf he suffered in the Western Conference semifinals vs. Houston. Forward Andre Iguodala is also dealing with a calf injury, but played 28 minutes in Game 2 and is expected to play in Game 3.

According to Wojnarowski, there’s “optimism” that Thompson will be able to play in Game 3. Durant is still likely out until at least Game 4.

Tipoff for Game 3 is slated for 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast on ABC.
