Orlando star Paolo Banchero was diagnosed with a torn right oblique yesterday and is going to be out indefinitely. The 6-foot-10, 21-year-old forward will be reevaluated in 4-6 weeks.

In only five games this year, Banchero has already dropped 33 points in a win at Miami, 50 in a home win over Indiana and 31 in Wednesday’s 102-99 loss at Chicago. The third-year pro is averaging 29.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 0.8 blocked shots and 0.6 steals per game for the Magic, who are 3-2 straight up and 2-3 against the spread going into tonight’s game at Cleveland.

Banchero has made 49.5 percent of his field-goal attempts, 34.4 percent of his 3-pointers and 66.4 percent of his free throws. He has a 28/11 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Banchero earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2022-23, averaging 20.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 0.8 steals per game. He hit 42.7 percent of his FGAs and 29.8 percent of his treys.

Banchero was selected to play in his first All-Star Game last year when he led Orlando to the playoffs. The Magic took the Cavaliers to seven games before losing Game 7 at Cleveland in the opening round.

In 80 regular-season games last year, Banchero averaged 22.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. He knocked down 45.5 percent of his FGAs, 33.9 percent of his 3-balls and 72.5 percent of his free throws.

Banchero logged 37.4 minutes per game in the playoffs against the Cavs. He averaged 27.0 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.1 steals per game.

As of Friday afternoon, most books had Cleveland listed as a 7.5-point home favorite tonight vs. Orlando. The total was 217.5 points, and the Magic were +240 on the money line.
