As Game 1 of the NBA Finals approaches, Kevin Durant and DeMarcus Cousins of the Golden State Warriors are making slow progress in their injury rehab.
Warriors coach Steve Kerr met with the media Monday and didn’t seem optimistic about either player’s ability to contribute early in this series.
Kerr said Durant will not play in Game 1, and the Warriors aren’t sure if he’ll travel to Toronto for the first two games of the NBA Finals as he recovers from a strained right calf.
“We’ll see where it goes from here,” Kerr told reporters according to ESPN’s Nick Friedell. “This is where the fact that there’s a lot of days in between games during the Finals helps us, so we’ll see.”
The Finals are more spread out than the other playoff series. The Warriors and Raptors will enjoy multi-day breaks after Game 1, Game 2, Game 4, Game 5 and Game 6. Game 1 is slated for May 30 while a potential Game 7 won’t be played until June 16.
Cousins is questionable for Game 1. That may sound optimistic for the Warriors’ big man, but Kerr addressed the difficulties of re-inserting Cousins back into the lineup on a big stage.
“DeMarcus is making good progress right now,” Kerr said. “The timing of this whole thing is tricky because he misses two months. It always takes big guys longer to find their rhythm; the speed of their game is so fast.
“If this was the regular season this would be simple, put him back in the starting lineup and give him his minutes and let him work his way back in and find his rhythm. It’d be an easy one, but we’re going into Game 1 of the Finals.”
Cousins tore his left quad in the first round against the Clippers on April 15.
Toronto is a one-point home favorite and -120 on the money line at most books. For the series, the Warriors are -280 and the Raptors are +230.
Game 1 is scheduled for Thursday night at 9 p.m. ET in Toronto and will be broadcast on ABC.
