Utah Jazz starting center Walker Kessler will have season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum today in Los Angeles. The procedure will be performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache.

In five games this year, Kessler was averaging 14.4 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.8 blocked shots and 1.4 steals per game. He had made 70.3 percent of his field-goal attempts, 75.0 percent of his 3-pointers and 70.0 percent of his free throws.

The 7-foot-2, 245-pound Auburn product was Utah’s first-round pick with the #22 overall selection in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Kessler started 40 times in 72 appearances as a rookie, averaging 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game. He buried 72.0 percent of his FGAs.

In four seasons, Kessler has started 125 times in 201 career games, logging an average of 25.3 minutes per game. He’s averaged 9.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 2.4 blocked shots and 1.2 APG.

Utah (3-5 straight up, 5-3 against the spread) lost a 114-103 decision at Detroit as a 9.5-point road underdog last night. In Kessler’s absence, veteran big man Jusuf Nurkic had six points, 17 rebounds, four assists, four steals and one blocked shot.

The Jazz will conclude a six-game road trip tomorrow night at Minnesota.
