The New Orleans Pelicans acquired Dejounte Murray on Friday from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Larry Nance Jr., E.J. Liddell, Dyson Daniels, a 2025 first-round pick (via the Lakers) and a 2027 first-round selection (least favorable of Bucks-Pelicans).

Murray spent the last two seasons in Atlanta after being traded from San Antonio for three future first-round picks. However, the backcourt tandem of Murray and Trae Young never brought the results the Hawks were anticipating. They lost to Boston in six games during the first round of the playoffs two seasons ago before falling in the play-in round this past year.

During the 2022-23 season, Murray played in 74 regular-season games, averaging 20.5 points, 6.1 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. He made 46.4 percent of his field-goal attempts, 34.4 percent of his 3-pointers and 83.2 percent of his free throws.

For making contact with a referee at the end of a Game 4 loss to Boston in the postseason, Murray was suspended for Game 5 back in Beantown. Nevertheless, Trae Young’s 32-footer with 2.8 seconds left proved to be the game winner in a 119-117 win to force a Game 6 back in Atlanta.

After dropping 38 on the Celtics in the Game 5 win, Young had 30 points and 10 assists in a Game 6 loss to end the series, but he hit just 9-of-28 FGAs and 4-of-12 from downtown. Murray had 14 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds in the losing effort.

For the series, Murray averaged 23.0 points, 7.2 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 2.0 SPG.

In 2023-24, Atlanta was a disappointment from start to finish. Murray played in 78 regular-season games, averaging 22.5 points, 6.4 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.4 SPG.

New Orleans now owns a core four of CJ McCollum, Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and Murray. Whether the Pelicans will make more moves remains to be seen.

The Pelicans have 12 players currently under contract and, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, they’re $2.6 million below the luxury tax and $8.5 million under the first apron.

In Nance, the Hawks get a 31-year-old, 11-year veteran forward who played in 61 regular-season games for New Orleans last year. He averaged 5.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 SPG. Nance knocked down 57.3 percent of his FGAs, 41.5 percent of his treys and 77.0 percent of his free throws.

In the Pelicans’ four postseason contests, Nance averaged 6.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.8 APG, making 58.8 percent of his FGAs.

New Orleans selected Daniels with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-7 wing is only 21 years old. As a rookie in 2022-23, Daniels started 11 of 59 games and averaged 3.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 APG.

This past year, Daniels started 16 of 61 regular-season contests and logged 22.3 minutes per game. He averaged 5.8 points. 3.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.4 SPG.

From the deal that sent Murray to Atlanta, San Antonio still owns the Hawks’ unprotected 2025 and 2027 first-round picks, in addition to an unprotected 2026 pick swap.
