Jalen Brunson shook Ausar Thompson with a crossover dribble to get free for a clean look at a beyond-the-top-of-the-key 3-pointer that was all nylon with 4.3 seconds left, as the New York Knicks (55-33 straight up, 44-43-1 against the spread) finished Game 6 on an 11-1 run to secure a 116-113 win at Detroit to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
The Knicks won outright as one-point road underdogs. They won the series 4-2 as -400 ‘chalk’ at most spots and the 229 combined points elevated ‘over’ the 213-point total.
Bettors had chances to grab New York in the +400 to +500 neighborhood with a live money-line wager when it was trailing from around 3:45 to 2:45 left.
After Brunson’s clutch 3-ball, the Pistons took their final timeout. They got the ball to their star Cade Cunningham, who dished to Malik Beasley on the right wing who was set up to get a nice look at a potential tying 3-pointer. But Beasley couldn’t handle the pass that hit him right in hands.
Brunson is a savage. He finished with 40 points, seven assists and four rebounds in the series clincher.
After Tim Hardaway Jr.’s pull-up jumper from midrange staked Detroit to a 112-105 lead with 2:35 remaining, Brunson started the Knicks’ surge with a driving floater in the paint – and one. He hit the free throw after being fouled by Dennis Schroder.
After New York got a stop, Brunson made another bucket to cut the deficit to two with 1:38 left. Detroit’s next possession was a nightmare, as Cunningham missed a shot in the paint and then committed a turnover after there was an offensive rebound off his miss.
After the turnover, Karl-Anthony Towns was fouled with 1:19 remaining. He made one of his two attempts from the charity stripe. Then with 49.1 ticks remaining, Towns fouled out by committing one against Jalen Duren, who made 1-of-2 at the free-throw line to give the Pistons a 113-111 advantage.
With 35.1 seconds left, Mikal Bridges tipped in a Brunson miss to tie the game. Next, Cunningham missed a driving shot in the paint, which was rebounded by Josh Hart as the Knicks called a timeout to set up Brunson’s heroics.
Bridges was fantastic all night, producing 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. He added four rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot.
All five New York starters were in double figures. OG Anunoby had 22 points, five boards, three steals and a pair of blocked shots, while Towns tallied 10 points, 15 rebounds and two steals. Hart finished with 13 points, 10 boards and four assists, and he was the primary defender on Cunningham, who missed all eight of his 3-pointers and was held to a series-low 23 points.
New York won all three games at Detroit by six combined points. In those victories, Brunson averaged 34.0 points, 9.0 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game. He had at least 30 points in five of the six games in the series and averaged 31.5 PPG and 8.2 APG.
In the losing effort, Cunningham had eight assists, seven rebounds, three steals and one block. In his postseason debut, he averaged 25.0 points, 8.7 assists, 8.3 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.3 BPG in the series.
Jalen Duren had 21 points and six rebounds in Game 6, while Thompson finished with 17 points, six boards, three steals and a pair of blocked shots. Beasley had 20 points in 24 minutes of playing time, burying 6-of-13 attempts from downtown.
