UPDATE: One day after San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan dubbed quarterback Brock Purdy “a long shot” to play Sunday at New Orleans, the team announced that Purdy will be out 2-5 weeks with a form of turf toe.
San Francisco (1-0 straight up, 1-0 against the spread) head coach Kyle Shanahan told media members Wednesday that star quarterback Brock Purdy is a “long shot” to play in Sunday’s Week 2 game at New Orleans.
In fact, per Shanahan, the fourth-year pro could miss multiple games due to injuries to his left, non-throwing shoulder and to an unspecified toe.
After the news broke, most books moved the 49ers from 4.5 to three-point road favorites against the Saints, who are off a 20-13 loss vs. Arizona as six-point home underdogs. Most spots moved the total from 42.5 points down to 40.5 or 41, and New Orleans was adjusted from +190 to +140 on the money line.
Purdy completed 26-of-35 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in this past Sunday’s 17-13 win at Seattle as a one-point road favorite. He added 17 rushing yards on five attempts.
Unfortunately for San Francisco, Purdy isn’t the only key player who was injured against the Seahawks. Tight end George Kittle, a six-time Pro-Bowl selection, suffered a hamstring injury that’ll keep him out for at least four games after he was placed on injured reserve.
In addition, WR Jauan Jennings injured his shoulder and didn’t return at Seattle. However, testing on his shoulder revealed that it isn’t a long-term injury and there’s a possibility he could play against the Saints. With that said, Jennings didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice.
Furthermore, San Francisco will be without veteran WR DeMarcus Robinson for two more games due to a suspension.
Mac Jones will get the starting nod for the 49ers if Purdy can’t go. The fifth-year veteran has 49 career starts to his credit, with his teams posting a 20-29 record.
Jones, who was a first-round pick by New England in the 2021 NFL Draft, connected on 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,672 yards with an 8/8 touchdown-to-interception ratio for Jacksonville in 2024. He has a 54/44 career TD-INT ratio.
In 15 regular-season games last year, Purdy completed 65.9 percent of his throws for 3,864 yards with a 20/12 TD-INT ratio. In 41 career regular-season contests, Purdy has a 67.8 completion percentage, 9,795 passing yards and a 66/29 TD-INT ratio.
Purdy, an Iowa State product, has helped the 49ers to a 4-2 record in six career postseason starts. San Francisco’s seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft has connected on 107-of-171 passes (62.6%) for 1,343 yards and six TDs compared to only one pick in the playoffs.
