Several hours after Terrion Arnold received good news in a Hillsborough County (Florida) courtroom, the Detroit Lions announced that they had released him.
Arnold was arrested last Wednesday night and is facing eight felony charges of armed robbery and kidnapping.
Judge Christopher Sabella granted Arnold a $1 million bond this morning, denying a motion from prosecutors to keep him jailed until trial. The Lions’ former first-round pick is not allowed contact with his six co-defendants or witnesses.
Arnold is also ordered to home confinement except for when he’s going to practice or games, legal appointments or court-related appearances. Furthermore, he must surrender his passport in the next 48 hours.
Detroit probably had the NFL’s best secondary at this time last year, but this position group is a complete mess. Safety Brian Branch tore his Achilles last December, missing the team’s last five games.
Kerby Joseph, the Lions’ other starting safety, is still dealing with a lingering knee issue and his status for 2026 is a question mark. He missed 11 contests last year. CB D.J. Reed, who is healthy right now, missed six games in 2025.
Arnold missed nine games last season, and now he’s gone. He was expected to be the club’s starting CB for many years to come.
So, now what for Dan Campbell’s secondary? Well, it would be nice if 2024 second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw could make some contributions. He recorded six tackles in eight games as a rookie, but the University of Missouri product missed all of last season injured.
Veteran CB Roger McCreary was the Tennessee Titans’ second-round pick with the #35 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft. The 26-year-old out of Auburn has started 38 times in 61 games, producing 257 career tackles, 22 tackles for loss, 17 passes broken up, four sacks, three interceptions and three forced fumbles.
CB Rock Ya-Sin has started 45 times in 96 games across his seven-year career for five different teams. In his first season with the Lions in 2025, he started six times and played in all 17 regular-season games, contributing 47 tackles and nine PBU.
If the Lions decided to explore available veteran free agents, they could look to CB Tre’Davious White or CB Trevon Diggs. White is a two-time Pro-Bowler who had a deflection that led to the game-sealing interception in Buffalo’s postseason win at Jacksonville this past January.
FanDuel has Detroit with 17/1 odds to win Super Bowl LXI. Those are the sixth-shortest odds on the board. The Lions are the +140 favorites to win the NFC North.
