The New York Jets agreed to terms on a two-year, $40 million contract with 26-year-old quarterback Justin Fields earlier today.
The Jets will provide Fields with $30 million of guaranteed money. He’s expected to be the opening-day starter, but the team also has Tyrod Taylor, one of the NFL’s premier back-ups, on the roster.
Fields spent his first three seasons in Chicago after the Bears made him their first-round pick with the #11 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.
As a rookie in 2021, Fields started 10 and played in 12 of 17 regular-season games. He went 2-8 as a starter.
Fields completed 58.9 percent of his passes for 1,870 yards with a 7/10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The Ohio State product had 420 rushing yards, two TDs and a 5.8 yards-per-carry average.
Fields started 15 games in 2022, recording a 3-12 record as a starter. He connected on 60.4 percent of his throws for 2,242 yards and 17 TDs compared to 11 interceptions. He added 1,143 rushing yards and eight TDs, averaging 7.1 YPC.
In 2023, Fields had a 5-8 record in 13 games as a starter. He completed 61.4 percent of his passes for 2,562 yards with a 16/9 TD-INT ratio. Fields added 657 rushing yards, four TDs and a 5.3 YPC average.
Fields was acquired by Pittsburgh ahead of his fourth NFL season. He started the first six games for the Steelers, helping them to a 4-2 record.
Fields completed 65.8 percent of his throws for 1,106 yards with a 5/1 TD-INT ratio. He also had 289 rushing yards, five TDs and a 4.7 YPC average.
In 50 career games, Fields has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 7,780 yards with a 45/31 TD-INT ratio. He has 2,509 career rushing yards, 19 TDs and a 6.0 YPC average.
Fields has a 14-30 record in 44 career starts.
The Jets lost some key contributors on Monday via free agency. DE Haason Reddick reached a one-year deal with Tampa Bay, OT Morgan Moses signed with New England, DT Javon Kinlaw joined Washington and cornerback D.J. Reed inked a deal with Detroit.
