According to a report from ESPN’s Dan Wetzel and Pete Thamel, Michigan is expected to suspend head football coach Sherrone Moore for two games. The self-imposed sanctions stem from the 2023 Connor Stalions scandal.
The suspension will be for the Wolverines’ games in Weeks 3 and 4 – vs. Central Michigan and at Nebraska – and will prevent Moore from participating in any team-related activities during those weeks. Moore will also receive other recruiting-related penalties, and the NCAA could further punish the second-year head coach.
Moore was former HC Jim Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator in 2023 when the accusations of Stalions’ sign-stealing scheme emerged. Moore is alleged to have deleted 52 text messages between him and Stalions in October of 2023 on the same day media reports surfaced detailing Stalions’ advanced scouting scheme.
Per a draft of the notice of allegations obtained by ESPN in 2024, the texts between Moore and Stalions were recovered via “device imaging” and Moore “subsequently produced them to enforcement staff.”
The draft accuses Moore of committing a Level 2 violation.
This will be the second time Michigan has self-imposed a suspension upon Moore, who was forced to miss the 2023 season opener vs. East Carolina due to a different NCAA case.
Michigan finished Moore’s first season as head coach with an 8-5 straight-up record and a 6-7 against-the-spread mark. However, the Wolverines finished the year on a high note with a three-game winning streak, including a 13-10 win at Ohio State as 19.5-point road underdogs and a 19-13 win over Alabama as 16.5-point ‘dogs at the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa.
Michigan will open the 2025 campaign at home vs. New Mexico on Aug. 30. The Wolverines play at Oklahoma in Week 2.
FanDuel has Michigan installed as a 5.5-point home underdog for their showdown vs. Ohio State on Nov. 29. The total is 47.5 points, while the Wolverines have +152 money-line odds.
FanDuel has Michigan’s odds to win the College Football Playoff at 28/1, which are the 11th-shortest on the board. The Buckeyes are +600 ‘chalk.’
Michigan has +850 odds to win the Big Ten Championship Game. The Wolverines have a season win total of 8.5 (‘over’ -184, ‘under’ +148).
