Notre Dame (7-3 straight up, 6-4 against the spread) will be without star guard Markus Burton for an indefinite period of time due to an injury to his left ankle.
The school released a statement early Tuesday afternoon.
“During the Notre Dame men’s basketball game at TCU Friday, December 5th, junior point guard Markus Burton sustained a left ankle injury.
“He will undergo surgery Wednesday. There is presently no timetable for his return.”
Burton went down in the first half of the Fighting Irish’s 87-85 overtime win at TCU as a seven-point road underdog.
As a sophomore last year, Burton sustained an injury to his right knee in an OT loss vs. Rutgers out in Las Vegas. That injury caused him to miss seven games.
“He’s a local kid as well, so this is a time for everyone in this community to wrap your arms around him and help him through it,” Notre Dame head coach Micah Shrewsberry said during his weekly media availability. “… I think it’s a rallying cry for all of us.”
In 10 games this season, Burton is averaging 18.5 points, 3.7 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. He’s made 48.9 percent of his field-goal attempts, 30.6 percent of his treys and 91.7 percent of his free throws.
Burton was named the ACC Rookie of the Year and a third-team All-ACC selection as a true freshman during the 2023-24 campaign. In 33 games, he averaged 17.5 points, 4.3 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 SPG.
As a sophomore last season, Burton played in 26 games and averaged 21.3 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 SPG. The former Mr. Basketball in the state of Indiana was a second-team All-ACC pick.
Burton had six points and five assists without a turnover in 10 minutes of play before going down against the Horned Frogs. He produced 18 points, 10 assists and five rebounds in a 76-71 win over Missouri last Tuesday.
Without Burton, freshman forward Jalen Haralson led the Irish to victory with 20 points, nine assists and five rebounds. He buried 8-of-12 FGAs. Haralson’s midrange jumper with three seconds left in regulation forced OT.
Notre Dame sophomore guard Cole Certa drained four 3-pointers in the second half to spark a 17-4 second half run to help his team overcome a 45-36 halftime deficit. Certa finished with 20 points on 6-of-12 marksmanship from downtown.
Braeden Shrewsberry added 15 points, five boards and four assists, while senior forward Carson Towt contributed 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists on 6-of-6 shooting from the field.
Notre Dame has three upcoming home games against mid-major foes starting Wednesday vs. Idaho. The Irish begin ACC play at Stanford on Dec. 30.
