The NBA sent out a memo to sportsbook partners Friday banning certain types of wagers, including parlays that include the ‘under’ on the same player’s stats. These types of parlays were used in recent betting scandals involving Terry Rozier and Jontay Porter.
Porter was issued a lifetime ban from the NBA back in 2024.
Porter admitted in court that he removed himself from games early to help gamblers win parlays that included the ‘under’ for his stats while playing for the Toronto Raptors during the 2023-24 season.
The sportsbooks have also agreed to eliminate ‘under’ bets for players that usually play less than 12 minutes per game. Furthermore, betting shops will no longer offer ‘first of’ markets for winning the opening tip and player’s specific rebound, assist and steal.
“The legalized sports betting industry is built on a foundation of dialogue and collaboration with our league partners and the states in which we operate,” a FanDuel spokesperson said in a statement to ESPN. “We remain unwavering in our commitment to building a legal and regulated market that roots out abuses by those who seek to undermine fair competition and damage the integrity of the games we love.”
Rozier has pleaded not guilty in a federal case in which prosecutors allege that he intentionally removed himself from a March 2023 game in order for bettors to win parlays involving the ‘under’ for his stats. He was playing for the Charlotte Hornets at the time vs. the Toronto Raptors, taking himself out after playing only nine minutes.
