Sports hit the pause button due to the coronavirus

Every major sports league in the United States has come to a screeching halt due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The NBA sparked a trend on Wednesday night, suspending the regular season after Utah’s Rudy Gobert tested positive for the virus. His teammate, Donovan Mitchell, also came down with the illness on Thursday morning.

In a chaotic couple of hours, college basketball conference tournaments went from games scheduled to be played in empty arenas to being canceled altogether.

A game between St. John’s and Creighton tipped off in the Big East Tournament, but was suspended at halftime.

The NCAA has not officially canceled or postponed the NCAA Tournament, but all signs are pointing in that direction. Duke and Kansas both released statements saying that they will not be participating in the Big Dance next week.

All three major professional sports leagues that are in season or about to begin — the NBA, NHL and MLB — have postponed league activity. Several smaller leagues have taken action as well, including the MLS. The Association of Tennis Professionals has suspended the tour for at least six weeks.

The only sport being played at this time is the PGA’s Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. There are no fans in attendance, however.

Unlike other sports, golfers aren’t touching and perspiring all over each other.

Offshore sportsbook Bovada released several props regarding the return of sports in the United States. The first prop came after the NBA’s decision to suspend play on Wednesday night.

The start date for the NBA to resume regular season action was set at April 15. Before April 15 was listed at -120, while after April 15 was also -120. That prop has since been taken off the board.

Their second prop came on Thursday afternoon, regarding the first league to resume regular season or postseason play. The NBA and MLB are +200 co-favorites, while the NHL is +210 and the MLS is +375.
