Say what?! Arkansas hires Petrino as new OC

More than 11 years after being fired as the head football coach at the University of Arkansas, the school is bringing Bobby Petrino back as the new offensive coordinator on HC Sam Pittman’s staff.

Petrino was fired on April 10 of 2012 after former AD Jeff Long conducted a four-day investigation that brought to light a number of revelations.

Petrino was injured in early April after he claimed he was in a motorcycle accident by himself. However, on April 6 just minutes before a police report was about to be released, Petrino admitted that he wasn’t solo for the motorcycle crash.

In fact, he was on the motorcycle with Jessica Dorrell, who was a former All-SEC volleyball player at Arkansas. Not only was Dorrell on the motorcycle with him, but Petrino also revealed that he had been committing adultery with her during an ongoing extramarital affair.

Long’s investigation uncovered much more, including a $20,000 Christmas present Petrino had given Dorrell that she used toward buying a new car. Petrino also circumvented affirmative action rules in hiring Dorrell to a position on the football staff.

In announcing Petrino’s dismissal, Long added that Petrino had told him a number of lies that were “contrary to the responsibilities” of being the HC at Arkansas.

Eight months later, Petrino was hired as the HC at Western Kentucky. He coached the Hilltoppers for one season before he was hired to return to Louisville, the same school he left for the Atlanta Falcons in January of 2007.

Petrino would eventually bolt on the Falcons to take the Arkansas gig. He had loads of success with the Razorbacks, who went 8-5 in his second season.

Then in 2010, the Hogs went 10-3 and earned a Sugar Bowl bid. In 2011, Arkansas finished the season with an 11-2 record, with its lone defeats coming at Alabama and at LSU.

The Crimson Tide ended up defeating the Tigers in New Orleans in the 2011 BCS Championship Game.

Petrino’s last game at Arkansas was a 29-16 win over 11th-ranked Kansas St. in the Cotton Bowl. He compiled a 34-17 record in four seasons leading the Razorbacks.

Petrino spent this year as Jimbo Fisher’s offensive coordinator at Texas A&M.

Pittman fired Dan Enos as OC in late October. The former was retained as HC after a disappointing 4-8 campaign, but Pittman goes into the 2024 season on a boiling hot seat.

Perhaps this stunning hire can help Pittman get the Hogs going again? Whatever the case, it’s a wild move that seems straight out of a bestselling fictional novel.

Only in the SEC, folks.
