Florida State isn’t moving on from head football coach Mike Norvell. Well, not today, that is.
The school announced this morning that no decision about the future of the program will be made until after the season concludes.
“We rightfully have high expectations in everything we do to represent Florida State in the manner that built our reputation as one of college football’s best programs, cultivating an extraordinary group of supporters nationally and globally,” AD Michael Alford said in a statement. “We embrace those expectations while also sharing the deep disappointment when results on the field are short of that standard.
“As we continue to move forward this season, our comprehensive assessment of the football program will be completed at season’s end. Meanwhile, we are fully committed to helping Coach Norvell and the 2025 Seminoles strongly rebound in the coming weeks.”
Since a 3-0 start that included a dominant win over Alabama, the Seminoles have lost four games in a row, including Saturday’s embarrassing 20-13 loss at Stanford as 17.5-point road favorites.
Before Norvell arrived in 2020, FSU hadn’t lost four games in a row since 1975. But this is the fourth four-game slide of his six-year tenure.
All the good will Norvell earned back from the Alabama victory is long gone. FSU hasn’t won a road game since the 2023 regular-season finale. The ‘Noles have lost nine straight ACC games and 11 of their last 12.
They finished last year 2-10 straight up and 3-9 against the spread. His teams have lost by double-digit margins 17 times.
Norvell’s record at FSU is 36-31 overall and 20-24 in ACC games. What would that ledger look like if we eliminated games started by former QB Jordan Travis? It would be an abysmal 7-22.
7-22? Yikes!
After going 13-1 in 2023, Norvell signed a lucrative contract extension. Therefore, it’s believed that he would be owed more than $58 million if he’s fired without cause after FSU’s regular-season finale at Florida.
The price of getting rid of the entire staff would likely cost more than $70 million.
FSU has an open date this weekend before hosting Wake Forest. The Seminoles play three of their last four games on the road.
If Norvell wants to change the school’s mind about making a move, he’d better go at least 4-1 in the five remaining games.
