Sears returning to Alabama, odds now 11/1 at FanDuel

Alabama star point guard Mark Sears withdrew his name from the 2024 NBA Draft late Wednesday afternoon. Nearly five hours later, his teammate Jarin Stevenson made the same decision.

This completes Nate Oats’s 2024-25 squad that’ll be looking for a return trip to the Final Four and the program’s first national championship. His 13 scholarships are taken by five returning players, (Grant Nelson, Latrell Wrightsell and Mouhamed Dioubate join Sears and Stevenson), four incoming freshmen (Derrion Reid, Aiden Sherrell, Naas Cunningham and Labaron Philon) and four transfers (Houston Mallette, Chris Youngblood, Aden Holloway and Cliff Omoruyi).

BetOnline, which previously had the Crimson Tide with 16/1 odds, has adjusted ‘Bama to the 8/1 ‘chalk.’ The next-shortest odds belong to Kansas (10/1), UConn (10/1), Duke (14/1) and Houston (14/1).

FanDuel has moved Alabama from 15/1 to 11/1. The betting shop has Oats’s squad with the second-shortest odds along with UConn, while the Jayhawks are 10/1 favorites.

DraftKings is listing the Huskies as 9/1 ‘chalk,’ followed by KU (10/1), Duke (12/1) and ‘Bama (12/1).

Like I pointed out 25 days ago when Omoruyi committed to Alabama, I got down on the Tide at 20/1 odds. I outlined all the reasons why I felt like Sears would come back to school and why ‘Big Cliff’ was the perfect fit for this team.

With Sears officially back on the roster, ‘Bama has as good an argument as anybody to be the preseason #1 team in the country.
