Arizona adds Trey Townsend, Horizon League POY

Arizona landed a monster commitment Wednesday when ex-Oakland forward Trey Townsend, the 2023-24 Horizon League Player of the Year, announced his pledge to the Wildcats.

Townsend nearly led the Grizzlies to the Sweet 16 in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, but they lost 79-73 in overtime vs. NC St. in a second-round showdown. He had 30 points and 13 rebounds in the losing effort.

In Oakland’s stunning 80-76 vs. Kentucky, Townsend contributed 17 points, 12 rebounds, two steals, one blocked shot and four assists compared to only one turnover.

Townsend spent four seasons at Oakland, starting 129 games in a row. As a freshman in 2020-21, he played 30.2 minutes per game and averaged 8.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest.

In 2021-22, Townsend averaged 13.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocked shots per game. He made 53.1 percent of his field-goal attempts and 75.7 percent of his free throws.

As a junior in 2022-23, Townsend averaged 16.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.0 blocked shots and 1.0 SPG. He buried 51.8 percent of his FGAs, 38.5 percent of his 3-pointers and 73.7 percent of his free throws.

In 2023-24, Townsend averaged 17.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 SPG. He drained 44.5 percent of his FGAs, 37.5 percent of his treys and 77.9 percent of his FTs. He played all 40 minutes in Oakland’s 83-76 win over Milwaukee in the Horizon League Tournament finals, producing 38 points, 11 boards, five assists, one blocked shot and one steal on 12-of-22 FGAs and 14-of-18 shooting from the charity stripe.

Townsend had five double-doubles in the Grizzlies’ last eight games.

Oakland (24-12 straight up, 23-13 against the spread) played tough competition in non-conference play. Townsend led the Grizzlies to a 78-76 win at Xavier as 15.5-point road underdogs, dropping 28 points, six rebounds, one steal and seven assists compared to only one turnover on the Musketeers. He made 11-of-18 FGAs.

Oakland covered the spread in a 79-73 loss vs. Ohio St. and a 64-53 loss to Illinois down in the Cayman Islands. Townsend tallied 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists against the Buckeyes, and he finished with 19 points, 10 boards and three steals vs. the Fighting Illini.

FanDuel currently has Arizona with 30/1 odds to win the 2025 NCAA Tournament. According to the 247Sports Composite, Tommy Lloyd and the Wildcats have the nation’s #3 recruiting class.

In addition to Townsend, Arizona has one five-star and three four-star prospects coming to Tuscon out of high school. Carter Bryant is the five-star forward who is ranked as the country’s #19 player.

Joson Sanon (#21), Jamari Phillips (#37) and 7-foot center Emmanuel Stephen (#92) are also ‘Zona-bound.
