The Golden State Warriors are aiming for their fourth NBA championship in five years.

Down 1-0 to the Toronto Raptors in the NBA Finals, the Warriors still are waiting on Kevin Durant to return from a right calf injury he suffered in Game 5 of the Western Conference semifinals.

However, according to Yahoo! Sports, Durant has resumed on-court basketball work with his teammates and should be available by Game 4.

According to Yahoo! Sports: “There’s some optimism within members of the organization that a Game 3 arrival could be viable, but there’s a stronger possibility that Game 4 is the most logical option, sources said.

“The franchise, sources said, does not foresee a scenario in which Durant would be completely unavailable during the NBA Finals.”

Golden State had been 5-0 in the playoffs without Durant, including the closeout game against the Houston Rockets and a sweep of the Portland Trailblazers.

Durant will be a free agent as soon as the season ends. That, paired with Golden State’s success before he arrived and while he was out, led to a growing subset of Warriors and NBA fans proclaiming that the team was just as good, or — gulp — better without Durant.

That chorus changed quickly Thursday night, as Toronto’s role players pounded Golden State into submission.

Durant averaged 26.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.9 assists during the regular season, while also playing much-improved defense. He increased his scoring average to 34.2 points per game during this playoffs, and his height and shooting ability allows him to create his own shots any time he wants. Many consider him the best basketball player in the world.

The aging Andre Iguodala has been banged up recently, and appeared to injure his leg late in Game 1. DeMarcus Cousins, who returned from a torn quad on Thursday, played eight uneven minutes in the 118-109 loss.

Golden State has two bench players they trust for major contributions, thanks to the top-heavy roster and the attached salaries: Kevin Looney and Shaun Livingston.

Durant’s return would do wonders for Golden State’s depth, not to mention its offense.

The Warriors have struggled to find a consistent third scoring option behind Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, particularly in games where Draymond Green isn’t as effective. On 2 of 9 shooting, Green scored 10 points in Game 1, third on the team, and also committed five fouls and had six turnovers.

Toronto has an opportunity on Sunday, though. The Raptors, currently a 2-point favorite in Game 2, can take a 2-0 series lead before the games shift to the Bay Area. And if Durant remained out for Game 3, Warriors fans and series bettors would catch some anxiety.

It will be interesting to watch when the Warriors insert Durant back onto the court, and how effective he’ll be when he returns.
