Edwards backing Hawks as home ‘dogs on Thursday

I’m posting this play early Monday afternoon, more than 72 hours before Thursday’s tip. Therefore, we’re taking a slight risk in case any new injury news pops up.

However, I think this line is so off that I’ll assume the risk to get a number that I like a lot. I made Atlanta (26-29 straight up, 27-28 against the spread) a 3.5-point home favorite vs. the Magic.

The Hawks have won three head-to-head meetings in a row over Orlando and five of the last six, including the lone encounter this season. They won 112-106 at Orlando as 6.5-point road underdogs on Feb. 10.

Even more impressive was the fact that Atlanta prevailed with All-Star guard Trae Young playing poorly. Young had more turnovers (nine) than assists (eight), scoring just 17 points on 6-of-17 shooting from the field and brutal 1-of-8 marksmanship from 3-point range.

Caris LeVert, who was acquired before the trade deadline, scored 18 points to go with eight rebounds and two assists without a turnover. Terance Mann, who was playing just his second game for Atlanta after coming over from the Clippers in a deadline-day deal, had 12 points, two boards and one assist in only 14 minutes of playing time. Mann drained all four of his field-goal attempts, 3-of-3 launches from downtown and his lone free throw.

Atlanta won four of its last six games before the All-Star break with its two losses coming by two combined points. The Hawks dropped a 126-125 decision as four-point home underdogs vs. San Antonio and lost 149-148 to the Knicks in overtime as eight-point road underdogs.

Atlanta is on a 7-0 ATS roll. The Hawks are 8-1 ATS with three outright victories in their last nine games as underdogs. They’re also 8-1 ATS in their last nine outings as home underdogs.

Orlando (27-29 SU, 25-30-1 ATS) is mired in a 4-11 SU and 3-12 ATS slide in its last 15 games. Going back further, the Magic are 8-17 SU and 7-18 ATS in their last 25 contests. They’re 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games as favorites.

PREDICTION: Atlanta +1.5 for one unit.
