Internet peculation ran wild Sunday night after UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman’s manager tweeted at Conor McGregor asking him if he wanted a title shot.
Since early this year, the promotion had reportedly been aiming for Usman to make his second title defense against Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal in July at International Fight Week. Both Masvidal and Usman have pointed at each other as to why that fight hasn’t come together.
Whatever the case, it looks like Masvidal is now aiming for a rematch with Nate Diaz, who lost by third-round TKO to Masvidal for the BMF belt at UFC 244. The fight was called when the doctor wouldn’t allow Diaz to go out for the fourth due to a cut over his eye.
Usman expressed his confidence about a matchup with McGregor on Twitter last night.
Bovada opened Usman as a -225 favorite early this morning. As of 5:30 p.m. Eastern on Monday, the offshore betting shop had Usman as a -235 ‘chalk,’ leaving McGregor as a +185 underdog.
BetOnline opened Usman as a -400 favorite this afternoon, but the odds were adjusted to -350. ‘The Notorious’ is a +285 underdog.
Former UFC double champ Daniel Cormier offered his opinion on a potential showdown between McGregor and Usman earlier today.
Diaz was as active on Twitter this past weekend as we’ve seen him in a long time. He reacted to McGregor’s claims that he’s either No. 2 or tied with Anderson Silva for No. 1 as MMA’s greatest of all time. Masvidal then reacted to Diaz’s reaction to McGregor.
Diaz chirped back with the below tweet.
Next, Masvidal offered to run it back:
BetOnline currently has Masvidal installed as a -300 favorite vs. Diaz (+250).
