Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Justin “The Highlight” Gaethje are set to collide on Sept. 14 in the UFC Vancouver main event. This is a can’t-miss 155-pound scrap that promises to produce fireworks galore.
Yahoo’s Kevin Iole was the first to report the booking early Friday morning.
Gaethje (20-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) is looking for a third consecutive victory after back-to-back first-round knockout wins over James Vick and Edson Barboza. The former World Series of Fighting lightweight champion has bagged Fight of the Night honors in four of his five Octagon appearances.
His UFC tenure started on July 7 of 2017 when he scored a second-round KO victory over Michael “The Menace” Johnson in a slugfest for the ages. Gaethje took home an extra $100,000 for FOTN and a Performance of the Night bonus.
Gaethje took his first career loss to former UFC lightweight kingpin Eddie Alvarez via third-round KO at UFC 218 in Detroit. Then on April 14 of 2018, current interim lightweight champ Dustin Poirier downed Gaethje with a fourth-round KO in a thriller.
The 36-year-old Cerrone (36-12-1 MMA, 23-9 UFC) is the promotion’s all-time leader in career wins (23), finishes (16), post-fight bonuses (18) and knockdowns (20). He is coming off a TKO loss to Tony Ferguson on June 8 when the doctor stopped the fight before Round 3.
Ferguson snapped Cerrone’s three-fight winning streak. After a three-year stretch of competing at welterweight, “Cowboy” made a triumphant return to the 155-pound loop with a second-round KO victory over Alexander Hernandez in January.
Then at the UFC Ottawa headliner in May, Cerrone dusted Al Iaquinta by unanimous decision. Cerrone has a 10-2 record in his last 12 fights in the lightweight division.
5Dimes sent out its opening odds for this lightweight contest on July 21. The offshore book made Gaethje a -250 favorite, leaving Cerrone as a +210 underdog.
