An MGM Grand bettor made a high-risk, low-reward gamble on one of Thursday night’s Top Rank boxing matches in Las Vegas.
The $192,001.30 wager to win $14,763.33 on Orlando Gonzalez-Ruiz paid off, as the featherweight boxer dispatched Luis Porozo in a unanimous-decision win at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. Judges ruled the fight 76-74, 77-73 and 77-73.
According to Todd Dewey of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the bet was originally parlayed with Sonny Conto, who was -2000. The parlay would have paid $25,107.85, but it was changed to a straight bet after Conto pulled out with an injury.
Jeff Stoneback, sportsbook director at The Mirage, told Dewey that this is the same bettor who also won $4,173.85 on an $187,847.35 wager last week. Boxer Gabriel Flores Jr. beat Josec Ruiz via unanimous decision to win that bout as a -4500 favorite.
Oddsmakers at MGM moved Flores Jr. to -5000 following the wager.
Betting on massive favorites is becoming a trend for this anonymous bettor — he or she put $136,000 on a three-leg parlay of boxing favorites two weeks ago, taking home $8,141 in winnings.
The chalky parlay was reported by Covers.
Gonzalez-Ruiz improved to 14-0 with 10 knockouts on Thursday night.
