‘Mattress Mack’ has become a household name in the sports betting world.
Houston furniture store owner Jim McIngvale has decided to dip his toes into the Super Bowl betting pool, placing a $1 million money-line bet on the San Francisco 49ers to beat the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
According to Todd Dewey of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, McIngvale is betting against Kansas City for the third game in a row. This time, he is taking a shot with San Francisco at +120 in the biggest game of the year. He placed the wager at The Mirage sportsbook in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
Things have not gone well thus far, as Mattress Mack has already lost bets on the Houston Texans and the Tennessee Titans in the NFL Playoffs. Both of those wagers were $1 million, so McIngvale finds himself down $2 million in the postseason.
The furniture store owner was in Las Vegas for the Winter Las Vegas Market furniture show and felt like the 49ers were mispriced.
“I think the game’s a toss-up, and I’m getting +120,” McIngvale told the RJ’s Dewey.
Most sports bettors would be hesitant to place a massive bet with a small edge, but ‘Mattress Mack’ is not your average customer. He gained his notoriety with a promotion at his Houston furniture store.
McIngvale said he would refund all mattress purchases of at least $3,000 if the Astros won the World Series. He hedged his promotion by betting $13 million on Houston to win the World Series, because the promotion’s liability was reportedly $20 million.
‘Mattress Mack’ is not done with his promotions. He began a Super Bowl promo this week, offering a 50 percent refund or 100 percent store credit on a Tempur-Pedic mattress purchase of at least $3,000 if San Francisco wins the game.
Sunday’s game will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. ET. on FOX.
