Jimmy G is favored to be 49ers’ Week 1 starter

Will the 49ers trade Jimmy Garoppolo after drafting a QB with the No. 3 pick?

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have not swayed on who they say their starting quarterback will be this season.

League sources believe they could trade Jimmy Garoppolo if the price is right, though. The 49ers are expected to select Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the third pick in this month’s draft, according to most projections and oddsmakers.

Shanahan is expected to start Garoppolo in the fall, giving Jones some time to ease into an NFL system. NFL Media’s Mike Giardi believes that could change if the 49ers are offered a first-round pick for Garoppolo.

“Called around in attempt to reaffirm San Fran’s price on Jimmy Garoppolo remaining a 1st rounder,” Giardi tweeted Monday. “I was not dissuaded. League sources say that hasn’t changed. There does remain a belief that ask may change post-draft, once the Niners get the QB at #3 in their building.”

Offshore sportsbook BetOnline released odds for Garoppolo to be the starter in the 2021 season opener. They have him priced at -150 to be the starter with a takeback price of +110 on the ‘No’ option.

While San Francisco is expected to bring in a rookie quarterback, one of the NFL’s most accomplished wide receivers is expected to hang up his cleats before the season begins. NFL executives are anticipating a retirement announcement from Arizona wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald in the coming months, according to The Athletic’s Mike Sando.

Fitzgerald is currently a free agent and is expected to retire if he does not sign with another team. BetOnline listed him at -500 to retire prior to the season, but early betting action has driven the line down to -350 as of Wednesday afternoon.

Quarterbacks Alex Smith and Teddy Bridgewater will likely be donning different jerseys in 2021. Smith was released by Washington last month after winning the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. The Jets are a +200 ‘chalk’ to snag Smith before the first game of the season, while Jacksonville (+250) and Indianapolis (+350) have the next-shortest odds.

There are reportedly ‘multiple teams’ interested in trading for Bridgewater. Carolina acquired Sam Darnold from the Jets after Bridgewater had a rough 2020 campaign. The Broncos have been mentioned as the most likely suitor for Bridgewater.

They are listed as a +150 ‘chalk’ to trade for him, according to BetOnline. New England (+300), Tampa Bay (+500) and New Orleans (+500) are also listed as possible options.
