Iowa State loses star Tyrese Haliburton to season-ending wrist injury

Iowa State sophomore guard Tyrese Haliburton sustained a broken wrist in Saturday’s home win over Kansas State. He will miss the rest of the season and his career with the Cyclones could be over.

Haliburton averaged 36.7 minutes in 22 games played this year. He was scoring at a 15.2 points-per-game clip, including a season-best 25 points in an 83-76 loss to Michigan. Haliburton also had nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and one blocked shot against the Wolverines.

Haliburton was also averaging 6.5 assists, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game. He had made 50.4 percent of his field-goal attempts, 41.9 percent of his launches from 3-point land and 82.2 percent of his free-throw attempts. Haliburton had a solid 142/61 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Iowa State has struggled mightily this year, going 10-13 straight up and 11-12 against the spread. Despite the below .500 record, the Cyclones have a respectable No. 69 ranking in both the NET and KenPom rankings.

They have only four losses outside of KenPom’s Top 50 and just one defeat to an opponent outside of KenPom’s Top 100. That would be the FAMU Rattlers, who are coached by former Florida assistant and former South Florida head coach Robert McCullum, who took his team into Ames and won 70-68 on New Year’s Eve.

Iowa State has five quality wins, including a marquee victory over Seton Hall by double digits (76-66) at home on Dec. 8. The Pirates are currently No. 11 at KenPom. The Cyclones have additional scalps vs. Alabama (#49) by a 104-89 count in the Bahamas, vs. Oklahoma (81-68, #43), vs. Oklahoma State (89-82, #76) and vs. Kansas State (76-63, #86).

Iowa State’s win over the Wildcats ended a four-game SU losing streak and a three-game ATS slump.

Steve Prohm is in the fifth season of his tenure at Iowa State. He took the Cyclones to the Sweet 16 in his first year, finishing 23-12. They went to the Round of 32 in 2016-17 and finished 24-11.

The 2017-18 campaign was a rebuilding one, with Prohm’s third team in Ames limping to a 13-18 overall record and a 4-14 mark in Big 12 action. The Cyclones were back in the NCAA Tournament last season, but they were ousted by 11th-seeded Ohio State 62-59 in an opening-round game in Tulsa.

Haliburton might have played his last game for Iowa State because his NBA stock is high right now. In the last mock update for the 2020 NBA Draft at, Haliburton was listed as the No. 11 overall pick to the New Orleans Pelicans.

As of Feb. 11, Iowa State had 200/1 odds to win the 2020 NCAA Tournament at DraftKings.
