Gilbert de-commits from Florida, back into portal

Arik Gilbert de-committed from Florida on Sunday and is back in the transfer portal.

Ex-LSU tight end and former five-star recruit Arik Gilbert has de-committed from Florida.

After Gilbert committed to UF on Jan. 31, he announced his decision to go back into the transfer portal on Sunday.

As a true freshman at LSU last season, Gilbert played in eight games and hauled in 35 receptions for 368 yards and two touchdowns. He left Ed Orgeron’s program to return home (Marietta, 20 miles North of downtown Atlanta) with two games remaining in the regular season.

Florida still has a pair of talented TEs on the roster in Keon Zipperer and Kemore Gamble. Zipperer caught three balls for 47 yards and two TDs in a 63-35 win over Arkansas when Kyle Pitts was injured last year. Gamble had three catches for 66 yards and two TDs in a 38-17 win at Vandy when Pitts was still out with an injury.

Gilbert was the No. 5 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite.
