When the Washington Nationals rallied in the latter stages of Wednesday’s Game 5 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, they didn’t just keep their season alive.
The Nationals injected life into a potentially monster payout for one bettor.
In October, William Hill sportsbooks took a $15,000 bet on Washington to win the World Series at 22/1 odds, according to David Purdum and Ben Fawkes of ESPN. If the Nationals go on to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals and the AL Pennant winner, that bettor will cash a $330,000 ticket.
Prior to the start of the 2019 MLB season, another bettor placed three future bets on Washington to win the World Series at DraftKings. Those three tickets came in at nearly $5,000 combined, which would result in just over $100,000 in winnings.
However, Purdum reports that a Nationals’ World Series victory would be the best possible result for Caesars Sportsbook and CG Technology in Las Vegas, due to a lack of liability.
Washington was as low as 10/1 in the live odds market during the eighth inning of Wednesday’s game, but back-to-back home runs off Clayton Kershaw gave the Nationals all the momentum they needed.
Wednesday night’s game wasn’t only good for sportsbooks in the futures market, as several books won big on the Game 5 handle alone. The Westgate SuperBook took money-line bets on the Dodgers of $50,000, $26,000 and $25,000, according to Todd Dewey of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
The Nationals weren’t the only team to punch their ticket to the NLCS on Wednesday. Washington will now face the Cardinals, who put up a historic 10-spot in the first inning against the Atlanta Braves and never looked back.
St. Louis is installed as an underdog against the Nationals, however, with Washington listed as a -125 series favorite. One bettor did not hesitate to question that line at the Westgate SuperBook on Thursday, placing a $9,500 bet on the Cardinals to win the series at +105 odds.
