UConn has lost 26 of its last 27 games against FBS competition. The lone win for the Huskies over that span came at UMass, which is a program that has a 1-15 record in its two seasons under current HC Walt Bell, the former OC at Florida St. Fifteen of UConn’s 26 losses since November of 2017 have come by margins of 30 points or more. The Huskies took last season off, opting not to play due to COVID-19.
Fresno St. went 10-4 straight up and 10-2-2 against the spread in 2017 under Jeff Tedford. Two of those four L’s were at top-ranked Alabama and at sixth-ranked Washington, and the Bulldogs covered the spread in both of those defeats. They also covered in a 17-14 loss at Boise St. in the MWC Championship Game.
Then in 2018, Fresno St. went 12-2 SU and 10-4 ATS, losing a pair of one-possession games at Minnesota and at Boise St. The Bulldogs won 38-14 at UCLA and then avenged its regular-season loss at Boise St. by going back to the smurf turf and beating the Broncos 19-16 in the MWC Championship Game.
In 2019, Fresno St. lost 31-23 at USC in the season opener and then fell to Minnesota at home in double overtime. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs went 4-2 in its next six games to improve to 4-4 going into November. They lost four straight, including three one-possession defeats, to finish 4-8. Tedford resigned due to health concerns after the ’19 campaign.
Fresno St. then went 3-3 last year, winning by at least 13 points in each victory. The Bulldogs have brought in nine transfers, including five from Power Five programs. They have QB Jake Haener, a third-team All-MWC selection last year when he threw for more than 2,000 yards in only six games with a 14/5 TD-INT ratio Haener’s WRs are ranked 12th in the country in Phil Steele’s National Unit Rankings.
Fresno St. has a veteran RB in Ronnie Rivers, who is second in program history in career rushing yards (3,473). Rivers has a more-than-capable backup in Jordan Mims, who has 1,203 career rushing yards and 13 TDs. Mims also has 45 career receptions for 521 yards and three TDs. The RBs are ranked 26th in the nation. The Bulldogs return 10 starters on defense, including their top 12 tacklers.
