The college basketball season is here.
Tuesday’s slate of games includes a meeting between No. 1 Michigan State and No. 2 Kentucky. It also pits No. 3 Kansas against No. 4 Duke.
Here are some of the favorites from each conference:
It’s no surprise to see Duke listed as a +250 ‘chalk’ to be the ACC’s regular season champion at BetOnline. The Blue Devils boast a season win total of 25.5 games and are 10/1 to win the 2020 NCAA Tournament.
Point guard Tre Jones is +850 to win the National Player of the Year award, according to Bovada.
Louisville and Virginia are both expected to give Duke a run for its money, with both teams listed at +400 to win the ACC. The Cardinals are 14/1 to win the NCAA title, while the Cavaliers have 20/1 odds to repeat as national champs.
North Carolina is also trailing close behind, with +600 odds to win the conference. Heralded freshman Cole Anthony is expected to lead the Tar Heels right away, as the team’s season win total is set at 24.5. Anthony is +550 to be the National Player of the Year.
Kansas saw its remarkable run of 14 consecutive Big 12 regular-season titles snapped last season when it finished third in the league. The Jayhawks are slated as a +200 ‘chalk’ to start a new streak this year. Guard Devon Dotson has +750 odds to win the National Player of the Year honors and KU’s win total is 23.5.
Baylor and Texas Tech follow Kansas at +400 to win the conference. The Bears have a season win total of 21.5, and the Red Raiders are at 22.5 as they look to re-charge after a loss to UVA in the 2019 NCAA Tournament finals.
Oklahoma is also expected to show continued improvement, with the Sooners listed at +600 to win the conference.
Villanova is once again in the driver’s seat to win the Big East. Jay Wright’s team is slated at +225 to win the conference and the Wildcats’ season win total is 24.5. Villanova is 20/1 to win the NCAA Championship.
Marquette, led by prolific scoring guard Markus Howard, is +450 to win the Big East. Howard is 10/1 to win the National Player of the Year award.
Seton Hall (+450), Xavier (+600) and Creighton (+700) are also expected to contend in the conference.
No team has a higher likelihood of winning its conference this year than Michigan State. The Spartans are +150 to win the Big 10, placing them well ahead of the other teams on the list. Senior point guard Cassius Winston is a +140 ‘chalk’ to win the National Player of the Year award.
Maryland and Purdue are both +600 to win the Big 10. The Terrapins have a season win total of 23.5 and the Boilermakers are listed at 20.5. Michigan (+700) and Ohio State (+800) could make some noise in the conference as well.
The Pac-12 is projected to be one of the most competitive conferences in college basketball this year. Oregon is the ‘chalk’ at +250 odds, but the Ducks’ season win total is only 21.5.
Arizona is +400 and Washington is +450. The Wildcats’ season win total is also 21.5. Colorado (+700), UCLA (+900) and Arizona State (+1000) all have a chance to make a charge at the regular-season crown.
There is a familiar face at the top of the SEC odds sheet. Kentucky has not won the regular season title since 2017, but the Wildcats are +225 ‘chalk’ to break that skid this year. Their season win total is 24.5 and they have the second-shortest odds to win the 2020 NCAA Tournament (+800).
Florida jumped up in everyone’s projections when the Gators grabbed Virginia Tech transfer Kerry Blackshear Jr. in the offseason. Blackshear is 10/1 to win National Player of the Year and he has the Gators at +450 to win the SEC.
LSU (+700), Auburn (+900) and Tennessee (+900) have all been standalone or co-champions in the conference over the past two seasons. Auburn is fresh off a Final Four run in March.
