Bruce Arians steps down; Bucs name Bowles as new HC

Todd Bowles is replacing Bruce Arians, who is moving into a front-office role for the Bucs after serving as HC for three seasons.

Tampa Bay’s 69-year-old head coach Bruce Arians has elected to step down, the team announced on Wednesday night. He’s moving upstairs into a front-office role, while the Buccaneers have named defensive coordinator Todd Bowles as their new HC.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Tampa Bay has signed Bowles to a new five-year head-coaching contract. The 58-year-old Bowles took over as the Bucs’ defensive coordinator in 2019.

He’s been an NFL assistant since 2000, with the exception of his four-year run as HC of the New York Jets from 2015-2018. Bowles went 10-6 in his first season with the Jets, but they still didn’t make the playoffs.

Then in his last three years on the job, the Jets limped to 5-11, 5-11 and 4-12 finishes. Bowles went 24-40 overall (37.5%) in New York.

Bowles had a masterful scheme to pressure Patrick Mahomes in Tampa Bay’s 31-9 win over Kansas City in Super Bowl LV.

Arians served as the Bucs HC for three seasons, going 31-18 overall (63.3%) during the regular season. He had a 5-1 record in the postseason, including a 4-0 mark in their Super Bowl run in 2021.

Arians went 9-3 as the Colts’ interim HC in 2012. In 2013, he was hired as the HC of the Arizona Cardinals.

In five seasons at the helm, Arians took Arizona to the playoffs twice. The Cardinals advanced to the NFC Championship Game in 2015 before losing to the Panthers. They finished that season with a 14-4 record.

Arians went 49-30-1 (61.4%) in the regular season for Arizona, going 1-2 in the postseason.

He has an 89-51-1 career record (63.5%) in the regular season and went 6-3 in the playoffs.

Tampa Bay has +700 odds to win the Super Bowl in the 2022-23 campaign. Those are the second-shortest odds behind Buffalo (+650) at DraftKings, which has the Bucs as +350 ‘chalk’ to win the NFC. They’re -280 favorites to win the NFC South at DraftKings.
