Some people dream of having $5 million.
Others reportedly want to bet even more than that on a single sports wager. According to Dustin Gouker of PlayNJ, someone in New Jersey wants to bet more than $5 million on the Houston Astros.
The type of potential wager on the Astros is currently unknown, but it is likely a World Series future.
There was a petition filed that is related to the sports betting license at the Meadowlands Racetrack, according to a document at the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement website.
The bettor has reportedly requested that the standard $5 million cap on a single sports bet be lifted for this wager. There have been no reports regarding the result of the petition.
Gouker believes a furniture retailer in Houston could be behind the bet. In 2017, Jim McIngvale ran a promotion at his store, Gallery Furniture, refunding all mattress sales in the event of the Astros winning the World Series.
McIngvale ended up giving away $10 million worth of mattresses when Houston won it all in 2017. This year, shoppers will receive a 100 percent refund on mattress purchases exceeding $3,000 or they can choose a 150 percent refund in Gallery Furniture store credit.
A potential bet of more than $5 million would allow McIngvale to hedge his mattress promotion, so he could be behind the petition.
The Astros are currently the ‘chalk’ to win the World Series at +220 odds at 5Dimes. The Dodgers are +275, the Yankees are +450 and the Braves are +975.
Houston is barely plus-money to win the American League at +110. The Astros pitching staff is on pace to break the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks record of double-digit strikeout games in a season. Arizona tallied 35 of those games in 2001 and Houston has notched 33 this year.
