The Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal rocked the baseball world.
Now the Astros are hoping their players don’t get rocked by pitches this season. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred told ESPN that he will be warning teams about intentionally hitting Houston players this season.
“We have been working for some time on a memorandum about intentionally throwing at batters,” Manfred told ESPN. “It’s really dangerous. Completely independent from the Astros investigation, we’ll be issuing a memorandum on hit by pitches which will increase the disciplinary ramifications of that type of behavior.
“I think that will be a tool for dealing with whatever flows from the Houston situation…Simply not appropriate to express frustration you have growing out of the Astros’ situation by putting someone physically at risk by throwing at them. It’s simply not acceptable.”
Offshore sportsbook BetOnline wasted no time in posting props regarding the potential beaning of Houston players this season. The Astros are listed at +200 to have the most players hit by pitch in the 2020 season.
BetOnline is currently offering a no-vig line on the prop, with any other team listed at -200. If opposing pitchers do take the opportunity for revenge, there is a prop available for that as well.
‘Under’ 1.5 Houston players charging the mound is listed at -300. Over 1.5 mound charges is +200.
According to the prop, a Houston player must charge the mound and make contact with the pitcher in order to count towards the total. Players around the MLB have been vocally upset with the league’s punishment of Houston and have called out the Astros’ players for their role in the sign-stealing scandal.
BetOnline’s final prop focuses on which Houston player will be beaned the most in the regular season.
Alex Bregman is a +100 ‘chalk,’ while George Springer is +200. Jose Altuve is +300 and Carlos Correa is +350.
Houston did not have a player in the top 10 of the league in hit by pitch stats last season.
The Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo led the MLB, getting hit 27 times. Bregman was beaned 10 times last season, while Springer was hit six times.
Altuve was hit three times and Correa was hit twice, but those numbers are likely to increase in 2020.
