BetOnline lists Johnnie Bryant as favorite to be Utah’s next HC

Former Utah assistant Johnnie Bryant, who is now on the Knicks' staff, is known to have a great relationship with Jazz star guard Donovan Mitchell.

Utah is looking for a new head coach earlier than expected.

Quin Snyder was under contract until 2024, but he stepped down as head coach following eight seasons with the team. The Jazz went 372-264 during his tenure, making the playoffs in six of his eight seasons. They never advanced past the second round, though, falling short at home in Game 6 of the first round against Dallas this year.

Utah reportedly spent several weeks offering Snyder a contract extension this offseason, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. His 372 wins mark the second most by a head coach in Jazz history, trailing Hall of Famer Jerry Sloan’s 1,127 wins.

“At the core, and what drives me every day is our players and their passion for the game, their desire to constantly work to improve and their dedication to the team and the Jazz,” Snyder said in a statement. “I strongly feel they need a new voice to continue to evolve. That’s it. No philosophical differences, no other reason. After eight years, I just feel it is time to move onward. I needed to take time to detach after the season and make sure this was the right decision.”

The Jazz will close the Snyder era with the longest active postseason streak in the Western Conference at six years. He was a stabilizing presence for the franchise as Ryan Smith bought it from the Miller family in 2020.

“Quin Snyder has embodied what Jazz basketball is for the last eight years,” Smith said in a statement. “The tireless work ethic and attention to detail Quin displayed each day is a testament to the professional he is. I have nothing but admiration for Quin and respect his decision.”

Offshore sportsbook BetOnline has released odds for who Utah will hire as its next head coach. New York assistant coach Johnnie Bryant is the +225 ‘chalk,’ while former long-time head coach (Blazers, Bucks, Hawks) Terry Stotts is +250.

Bryant attended the University of Utah and was an assistant coach for the Jazz from 2014-20. He is reportedly close with star guard Donovan Mitchell, who is expected to be the key building block for the franchise moving forward.

Current Jazz assistant Alex Jensen has the third-shortest odds at +500. Jensen has plenty of ties to the state as well, being named the 1994 Mr. Basketball from Utah. He also played at the University of Utah and has spent the last nine years with the franchise as an assistant.

Some other possibilities for the job include former Lakers head coach Frank Vogel (+650), Toronto assistant coach Adrian Griffin (+900) and Milwaukee assistant Charles Lee (+900).

BetOnline does not expect Snyder to jump right back into coaching after stepping away from Utah. He is listed at -500 to not be an NBA head coach by the first game of the 2022-23 season, with a takeback price of +300.
