Civil War in Iraq? <div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Originally posted by: old as dirt
Of course there's a civil war going on in Iraq right now. O'Reilly just reported that 3438 Iraqis were killed last month(July). Iraqis killing other Iraqis...that is the definition of a civil war.</end quote></div>
By that definition there is a civil war going on in just about every country in the world. There were 18,000 murders in the US last year, is there a civil war going on in the US? If the Bloods are killing the Crips in LA does that mean there is a civil war in the US?
Iraq is having a large amount of sectarian terrorism, violence and murders but I think for it to be a civil war by the historical context of that term, there would have to be a more organized factional effort to try and overthrow the new government. From what I have seen, the effort appears to be just disorganized terrorism and score-settling between rival sects of Islam. I think a true civil war is possible if the US leaves before the new government, which has been fully-functional for only less than a year, has the strength to stand on its own. |
