Default On Roberts being confirmed

I am not now, nor have I ever been/ likely never will be a conservative ! In Canadian elections, I vote for the Lefties, sometimes holding my nose ( because of candidate/ issue position ). Often though, a " conservative/ liberal " doesn't apply properly to everybody. For example, I am a big believer in the Death penalty for many types of crimes and if the accused gets a fair trial.

As many know, I think Bush is a very mediocre President. He divides people rather than brings them together; follows the lead of minority, evangelical Christian groups, rather than being a leader of the country.

Notwithstanding those opinions, I believe Roberts should be selected to the Supreme Court. He is clearly extraordinarily qualified to be a member, a gfted, highly intelligent and thoughtful jurist. The Democrats should go ahead, ask their questions and vote to confirm him.

Of course, if Bush opts for a conservative for the next replacement, that bar has been set awfully high.

Default RE: On Roberts being confirmed

I have no doubt he'll be confirmed. BUt I'm more convinced than ever that he'll be a fvckhead of the Scalia-Thomas stripe. Responding to questions about his opinion of Roe v Wade, he says that he's an umpire, not a player, presumably meaning that he will merely interpret the law, not make it. Well, great, except so far in his public career he's been an umpire who's called every pitch by the side he likes a strike, and every pitch by the other side a ball. He doesn't have to strike down Roe v Wade; he only has to wait until our sick president and his cronies pass a new law mandating a hundred years in prison for anyone who says the word "abortion," and then uphold it when it's challenged. Plus it's not only abortion, it's the whole range of social issues; say goodbye to medicinal marijuana, legal sports betting, physician-assisted suicide, cloning, family planning, and on and on.

This nomination has successfully pissed off the far left and far right. Also, Scalia and Thomas are not exactly thrilled about being passed over. So far, very interesting.
