DOW +63.21 Thursday(+)

Cnn Money:

Record rally: Wall Street looks set to end the year on a high.
U.S. stock futures are pointing up again after the Dow Jones industrial average
on Thursday recorded its highest ever close.
The Dow is up an impressive 25.7% in 2017.
That's its best annual performance since 2013
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq are close to all-time highs as well.

Global winners: Many stock market indexes around the world have outperformed
the U.S. by a wide margin.
Case in point: Argentina's Mervel index is up 77% this year,
while the main Turkish index has surged 46%.
But the final day of the year is looking mixed.
European markets are mostly negative in early trading Friday,
but the majority of Asian markets ended the day with gains.

Apple's apology: Apple (AAPL) has apologized to customers for how it rolled out an
update that can slow down older iPhones. It is offering cheaper battery replacements
to make up for it.
The tech company upset many users with a software update that deliberately slowed down
older phones in some situations to extend battery life. Some thought it was a ploy to get
people to upgrade to new devices. A number of people have filed lawsuits over the feature
and are seeking class action status.

Riding with Uber:
Japanese tech conglomerate SoftBank (SFTBF) has reached a deal to invest more than
$7 billion in Uber for a 15% stake in the ride-hailing startup, according to sources familiar
with the deal.
The vast majority of that investment comes from SoftBank buying up shares
held by existing Uber shareholders, including employees and earlier investors.

DOW -118.29 Friday (-)

Cnn Money:

Welcome to 2018: It's the first trading day of the year on Wall Street
and investors are wondering if the market momentum from 2017 can continue
into the new year.
U.S. stock futures are mixed in early trading after markets took a slight dip
on the final day of 2017.
Over the past year, the Dow Jones industrial average shot up by 25%,
the S&P 500 surged by 19% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq index outshone them
with all with a stunning 28% gain.

European markets are mostly negative in early trading, though the losses
are modest.

Most Asian markets ended the day with gains.
The main Chinese indexes had a particularly good day with gains of 1% to 2%.
Investors were feeling optimistic following the release of strong manufacturing
data in the country.

Tax take: BP (BP) is the latest corporate giant to announce that it will be taking
a massive charge in the fourth quarter of 2017 because of changes to U.S. tax rules.
BP estimates it will have to write off about $1.5 billion in credits that it had been planning
to use to lower its tax bill in the future.
Major European banks Barclays (BCS), Credit Suisse (CS) and UBS (UBS),
plus oil giant Shell (RDSA), also indicated late last year that the new tax rules
could cost them between $1 billion and $3 billion each in one-off charges.
Goldman Sachs (GS) forecast last week that changes to American tax rules
would knock $5 billion off its profit in the final quarter of 2017. Most of this hit
was due to a new so-called "repatriation tax," a one-time tax on the cash it hold
overseas.

Nevertheless, all the companies said that the lower U.S. corporate tax rate --
down to 21% from 35% -- would ultimately be good for business.

Market movers -- Oil, U.S. dollar: Crude oil futures are pushing up to hit their highest levels
since mid-2015. Oil prices have surpassed $60.50 per barrel in early trading.
"Crude oil prices have rallied to fresh two-and-a-half year highs as political tensions
in OPEC member Iran have boosted prices overnight," explained analysts at Accendo Markets.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has been trying to downplay the significance
of sometimes violent protests across his country.
At least 21 people are dead amidst the biggest challenge
to the Tehran regime since mass demonstrations in 2009.

In currency markets, the U.S. dollar continues to weaken.
The U.S. dollar index -- which tracks the value of the greenback versus
a collection of other major global currencies -- is down by more than 3%
in the last two months. The dollar is particularly weak right now versus
the Mexican peso.

DOW +104.79 Tuesday (+)

Cnn Money:

Starting on a high:
Wall Street celebrated the new year on Tuesday by pushing stock indexes to new all-time highs.
U.S. stock futures continue to strengthen, indicating the S&P 500 and Nasdaq could hit new records today.
The Dow Jones industrial average continues inching closer towards 25,000 points.
European markets are also mostly positive in early trading, and Asian markets ended the day with gains.

Twitter is exploding with concern about President Trump's tweet taunting
North Korea about his "bigger & more powerful" nuclear button, but investors
appear to be paying little attention.

Pharmacies report earnings: Rite Aid (RAD) is set to report earnings after trading closes on Wednesday,
and Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) reports on Thursday.
This is an important time for the pharmacy sector as CVS (CVS) pursues an acquisition of Aetna (AET).
The deal could transform drug stores into health clinics and lower prices for consumers.
Pharmacies may also have to contend with competition from Amazon (AMZN).
Rumors of the company's entry into the prescription drug distribution business have been swirling.

Fed minutes:
The Federal Reserve's monetary policy committee is releasing the minutes of its December meeting.
Investors will parse the text to get a sense of whether to expect extra interest rate hikes in 2018.
"It will be interesting to see the [Fed's] views on the fiscal impacts of Trump's tax reform and how
this affected the prospects for interest rate hikes in the future," said Daniel Bergvall, an economist
at the Swedish bank SEB.

Let's call the whole thing off:
MoneyGram is calling off its merger with a Chinese financial services giant after failing to get approval
from the U.S. government.
"The geopolitical environment has changed considerably since we first announced the proposed transaction
with Ant Financial nearly a year ago," MoneyGram (MGI) CEO Alex Holmes said in a
statement Tuesday.
The deal between Ant Financial, an affiliate of Jack Ma's tech company Alibaba (BABA),
and the American money transfer service was first announced in January 2017.
Ant Financial originally agreed to pay $880 million, but upped its offer to $1.2 billion in April.
The agreement had been under review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States,
which vets deals that could give a foreign investor control of a U.S. business.

DOW +104.79 Wednesday (+)

Cnn Money:

Dow 25,000 in sight: The Dow Jones industrial average is less than 80 points
away from hitting 25,000 points. The milestone would have seemed a long way
off to investors just a year ago, when the Dow was below 20,000.
The first two trading days of 2018 have each brought new stock market records
in the U.S. Today could be another big day as U.S. stock futures move higher.
Stock markets in other parts of the world are also buoyant,
with some European indexes climbing by about 1%.

Asian markets ended the day with gains.
The Nikkei index in Japan stood out with a 3.3% jump as trading relaunched
in Tokyo following an extended holiday.

Computer chip crisis: Intel (INTC) and AMD (AMD) are in focus after researchers revealed
that two major flaws in computer chips could leave a huge number of computers and smartphones
vulnerable to security issues.
The flaws, called Meltdown and Spectre, exist in processors. Meltdown appears to be specific
to Intel chips. The Spectre flaw was found in Intel, AMD and ARM processors.
Intel said that "many types of computing devices -- with many different
vendors' processors and operating systems -- are susceptible to these exploits."
Its shares dropped 3% on Wednesday
AMD said there is a "near zero risk of exploitation" for one of the security issues,
due to architecture differences. Its shares are pushing up by 4% in premarket trading.
ARM said in a statement a small subset of its processors are susceptible to the flaws.
ARM is owned by SoftBank (SFTBY).

Tesla trouble: There's negative news swirling around Tesla on Thursday morning and that
could put pressure on shares when the markets open.
Tesla (TSLA) said on Wednesday it's still way behind on its Model 3 production goals,
producing just 2,425 of the sedans over the last three months. Tesla said last year
that it hoped to be making 5,000 Model 3s per week by the end of 2017.
Still, the company promised it has "made major progress addressing Model 3 production bottlenecks."

Earnings and economics: Monsanto (MON) and Walgreens (WBA) plan to release earnings before the open,
while Franklin Covey (FC) and Sonic (SONC) plan to release earnings after the close.

The U.S. Crude Inventories report is set to be released at 11 a.m.
ET. Crude oil prices are currently surging to trade around $62 per barrel,
a level not seen since late 2014.

DOW +152.45 Thursday(+)

Cnn Money:

December jobs report:
The market-moving U.S. jobs report is set to come out at 8.30 a.m. ET
from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Between January and November, the country added 1.9 million jobs.
Economists forecast there will be another gain of 190,000 new jobs in December.
Job growth slowed down last year compared to 2016, but that makes sense after more
than seven years of interrupted gains.
As unemployment ticks down, job growth gradually slows.
It's expected the 4.1% unemployment rate will be unchanged in December.

Stock market overview:
U.S. stock markets have hit record highs every trading day this week
and it looks like the trend will continue Friday. U.S. stock futures are pointing up,
indicating the Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq will pop at the open.

European markets are nearly all rising in early trading.
Major Asian markets closed the week with gains.

Apple fixing flaws:
Apple (AAPL) has confirmed all its Mac systems and iOS devices are affected
by two recently disclosed processor flaws called Spectre and Meltdown.
In an announcement on Thursday, Apple said it had released mitigations
to defend against Meltdown in iOS 11.2, macOS 10.13.2, and tvOS 11.2.
It will release mitigations in Safari to defend against the Spectre bug
"in the coming days," the release said.
"There are no known exploits impacting customers at this time," Apple said,
echoing what other companies and security researchers have said.

Toshiba's nuclear option: Toshiba's (TOSYY) disastrous foray
into the U.S. nuclear business is coming to an end.
The company is selling Westinghouse, its beleaguered U.S. nuclear unit,
for $4.6 billion to Canadian investment firm, Brookfield Business Partners.

The collapse of Westinghouse cost Toshiba some $6.4 billion,
forcing the storied Japanese conglomerate to admit its financial
future was in peril. It has been offloading assets in order to survive.

DOW +220.74 Friday(+)

Cnn Money:

Tech talk: The annual Consumer Electronics Show -- better known as CES --
is getting under way in Las Vegas and runs through Friday. Tech companies
including LG (LPL), Samsung (SSNLF) and Microsoft (MSFT) use the international
show to wow the public with new gadgets.

Announcements have already been trickling out ahead of the official opening Tuesday.
Volkswagen (VLKAY) and tech firm Nvidia (NVDA) revealed new advances for artificial
intelligence in vehicles.

This year, Intel's (INTC) CEO will give a keynote address -- and perhaps answer some
questions about the flaws in processing chips revealed last week that could make billions
of devices vulnerable to hackers.

Fresh Apple fight: Two heavyweight investors say Apple (AAPL) should do more to combat
iPhone addiction among young people.

California State Teachers' Retirement System and Jana Partners --
two major funds that own about $2 billion in Apple stock between them --
are pressuring the tech giant to take a stronger stance on the mental health effects
of excessive smartphone use by children and teenagers.
The investors pointed to a number of studies highlighting the detrimental effects of
smartphone addiction. They include being less attentive in class, insufficient sleep
and a higher risk of depression and suicide.
The investors called on Apple to research and develop more sophisticated parental
controls for phones, criticizing what's available at the moment.

Global market overview:
U.S. stock futures are pointing up again after a record-setting run last week.
The Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq are all poised to hit fresh
all-time highs.

European stock markets are mostly rising in early trading
after all Asian markets ended the day with small gains.

What to watch -- Pfizer: Shares in Pfizer (PFE) could be in focus on Monday
after the drug-maker reportedly announced it was abandoning research to find
new drugs aimed at treating Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Dow Futures currently +1.0, S&P and Nasdaq in the red.

Very well could see a pull back after such a run up,
but more often than not, shorting the Market hadnīt proven
very successful.

DOW -12.87 Monday(-)

Cnn Money:

Can't stop, won't stop:
U.S. stock futures are pointing up again after a string of record-setting days.
Volatility levels remain low and investors seem unconcerned about the potential
for a market correction.

European markets are rising in early trading following a strong day in Asia.
Investors have been cheering official talks between North Korea and South

"The question is whether this should be interpreted as the beginning of a decrease
in tensions or as way for North Korea to try to push South Korea and the U.S. apart,"
said Andreas Johnson, an economist at Swedish bank SEB. "However, equity markets
seem to go for the former interpretation."

Samsung stock slide: Shares in Samsung (SSNLF) slipped on Tuesday as investors
were underwhelmed by the company's profit estimate for the final quarter of 2017.
The company's sales and profits are expected to rise significantly, but the numbers
didn't meet investors' high expectations.

CES rolls on:
The annual Consumer Electronics Show -- better known as CES --
is officially under way in Las Vegas and runs through Friday.
On Monday, Intel (INTC) CEO Brian Krzanich gave a keynote address where he said
the tech industry has done a "remarkable" job responding to the embarrassing computer
chip flaws that caused alarm around the world.
Krzanich thanked other firms for their efforts to protect customers following the
disclosure of the Spectre and Meltdown vulnerabilities in processing chips,
which could allow hackers to steal data.
But he didn't offer an apology or an explanation for why Intel
and other leading chipmakers failed to spot the problems for decades.
Apple (AAPL) on Monday released new security updates for iPhones, iPads,
and Macs to protect users from Spectre.

Cellphone intrigue:
AT&T (T) and Chinese smartphone maker Huawei may have had a falling out,
according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.
It reported that AT&T just walked away from a deal to sell Huawei phones in the U.S.
The U.S. market has proven to be a tough one for Huawei to crack after Congress issued
a critical report in 2012. Lawmakers suggested that Huawei equipment could pose a threat
to national security -- allegations that the Chinese company described as "baseless."

DOW +102.80 Tuesday(+)

Cnn Money:

Taking a breather?:
U.S. stock futures are pointing down Wednesday after a breathtaking run in recent days.
All three indexes -- the Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq --
hit new all-time highs on Tuesday.
Enthusiasm on global markets has also faded, with most European indexes sinking in early trading.
The majority of Asian markets ended the day with losses.

Oil gains:
Crude oil futures are continuing to push up, reaching the highest
level seen in more than three years. U.S. crude is trading around $63.50 per barrel, a far cry
from the lows of early 2016 when prices were around $26.
Prices could be volatile Wednesday as the latest weekly
U.S. crude inventories report comes out at 10:30 a.m. ET.

Oil dropped sharply in 2014 and only started recovering in 2016.
OPEC's decision to limit production has helped, and the cartel
agreed in November to extend those supply curbs to the end of 2018.

Stocks to watch --
Domino's, Kodak: Domino's Pizza (DPZ) stock has been piping hot lately,
with shares quintupling over the past five years. But things could cool a
little Wednesday after Domino's announced its CEO would leave at the end of June.
CEO J. Patrick Doyle will be succeeded by Richard Allison,
currently president of Domino's international division.

Shares in Kodak (KODK) could rise again after surging by 119% on Tuesday.
The venerable camera brand announced it was investing in blockchain technology
and plans to launch a "photo-centric cryptocurrency" called KODAKCoin.

Earnings: Lennar (LEN) is reporting quarterly results ahead of the open.
RE/MAX Holdings (RMAX) is expected to release earnings after the closing bell.

DOW -16.67 Wednesday(+)

Cnn Money:

Stock enthusiasm wanes:
After a terrific start to the year, enthusiasm in U.S. stock markets seems to have waned a bit.
U.S. stock futures are holding steady after the Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq
all dipped by 0.1% on Wednesday.
But the indexes are still very close to all-time highs set earlier this week.
Sentiment has been spurred by enthusiasm over the new tax law, solid economic growth
and good corporate earnings.

Investors are now mulling their next moves.

European markets are mostly negative in early trading.
Asian markets ended the day with mixed results.

Market mover -- Xerox: Shares in Xerox (XRX) are expected to pop at the open following
media reports that the company is considering a deal with Japan's Fujifilm (FUJIF).
Xerox -- a pioneer in the photocopier industry -- is currently worth just $7.7 billion.
Fujifilm is worth about $22 billion.
A Xerox spokesperson said she wouldn't "comment on speculation."
Fujifilm also declined to comment.

Bumpy bitcoin:
Bitcoin trading could soon be outlawed in one of the virtual currency's biggest markets.
The South Korean government is preparing a bill to ban trading in all cryptocurrencies
including bitcoin, Justice Minister Park Sang-ki said Thursday.
"There are great concerns regarding virtual money," Park told reporters in Seoul.
"The government has repeatedly warned about the fact that it is a very dangerous
transaction but the message has not properly been delivered."
Park didn't give details on when the bill would be introduced.
But his comments prompted bitcoin to drop by about 14% overnight.
It has since recovered slightly.

Earnings: Delta Air Lines (DAL) plans to release earnings before the open Thursday.

DOW +205.60 Thursday (+)

Cnn Money:

Bank earnings bonanza:
JPMorgan (JPM JPMORGAN CHASE) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are
set to report fourth quarter earnings on Friday morning.
Overall, big banks had a good 2017 with solid results.
However, investors are bracing for banks to record big one-off charges
in the final quarter related to the overhaul of U.S. tax rules.
Goldman Sachs (GS) was the first big bank to announce a hit to profits
in 2017 from a new so-called "repatriation tax."
Congress expects the new one-off tax on overseas profits will bring in
an estimated $339 billion over time.
Companies expect the tax reform as a whole to be beneficial in the long run
but there could be short term pain.
BlackRock (BLK) is also due to report earnings before the market opens.

Surging stocks:
U.S. stock futures are pointing up again, indicating the major indexes
will hit fresh record highs on Friday.
The Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq have been on a
big winning streak since President Trump's election in November and
have been hitting new highs nearly every day of 2018.
The S&P 500 hasn't retreated 3%, either in a single day or over several days,
since early November 2016. That is the longest period of calm in history,
according to Bespoke Investment Group.

European markets are mixed in early trading.
Most Asian markets ended the week with small gains.

Iran sanctions deadline:
President Trump will decide on Friday whether to continue waiving
some sanctions on Iran.
The sanctions are not set to expire for several years.
But the waivers, which must be renewed every 120 days under the
terms of the Iran nuclear deal, suspend them temporarily.
Trump waived the sanctions at the last deadline,
but it's not clear whether he will do so again.
If he decides not to, Boeing's (BA) $8 billion deal
to sell 80 jets to Iran Air could be at risk,
as could Total's (TOT) huge energy investment in Iran.

December retail sales:
The U.S. Census Bureau is set to report retail sales figures
for December at 8:30am(Eastern)
December is a critical month for the industry because
it's when Americans do much of their holiday shopping.
Struggling retailers got a bit of a break in November,
when retail sales grew by 0.8% -- better than expected.

DOW +228.46 Friday(+)

Cnn Money:

Dow 26,000: U.S. markets appear to be headed for a strong open on Tuesday.
U.S. stock futures were pointing higher as investors returned from the holiday weekend.
The Dow Jones industrial average, which closed just above 25,800 on Friday,
could blow past the 26,000 point barrier in early trading.
It's already a record-setting day on global markets.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 1.8% to hit an all-time high.
The index has soared by 40% over the past year thanks to strong
performances by tech giant Tencent and the Chinese economy.
Tokyo's Nikkei rallied by 1%.
In Europe, markets were more mixed.

Stocks to watch --
BP, Viacom, CBS: Shares in BP (BP) slipped 1.5% in London after the oil giant said
it would book $1.7 billion in new charges in 2017 related to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Shares in Viacom (VIA) and CBS (CBS) could be on the move again after surging on Friday.
News reports suggest that the media companies could be reunited once again.

U.S. dollar weakens: The U.S. dollar slipped 0.4% on Tuesday.
The U.S. dollar index -- which tracks the greenback versus a range of other currencies --
has shed about 2.5% this year.
The currency is trading near a three-year low following a 10% decline in 2017.
Some analysts suggest that political dysfunction in the U.S. is pushing the dollar down,
with investors preferring to put their money into the euro as the European economy improves.

Budget deadline looms:
The latest short-term U.S. government spending measure is set to expire on Friday.
Republican leaders will need to pass another extension before the deadline in order
to keep the government running.

DOW -10.33 Tuesday(-)

Cnn Money:

Bank earnings: Bank of America (BAC) and Goldman Sachs (GS) will report quarterly results ahead of the open.
Investors expect the two banks to report huge one-time hits to their profits
because of changes to U.S. tax rules.
Goldman warned in late December that the recently approved tax law would knock $5 billion off its earnings.
Citigroup (C) posted an $18.3 billion loss on Tuesday, taking a $22 billion charge because of the tax cut.
Many firms are adjusting the value of so-called deferred tax assets because the corporate tax rate is going down.
Some also face a one-time tax on their overseas earnings. Still, the new tax law is expected to be a boon for banks
over the long term.

Carillion contagion fears:
The collapse this week of British construction giant Carillion has raised concerns about its competitors.
The company had employed 43,000 people and operated in the U.K., Canada, the Middle East and Northern Africa.

Shares in Interserve, a rival British construction and real estate firm,
dropped by as much as 16% in London after the Financial Times reported that
the government had set up a team to monitor its financial health.
Shares quickly bounced back, however.

Global stock market overview:
U.S. stock futures were higher after a volatile trading session on Tuesday.
European markets were mostly lower in early trade. Asian markets ended the day mixed.

Stock movers -- Apple, Under Armour, Burberry: Apple (AAPL) shares hit a record high on Tuesday,
but were slipping in premarket trade. Under Armour (UA), which plummeted almost 9% on Tuesday,
was also in the red.
Burberry (BURBY) shares lost 7% in London after the company released its latest quarterly update.
Shares in the fashion firm have declined 16% since hitting a record high in November.

DOW +322.79 Wednesday (+)

Cnn Money:

China flexes: The world's second-largest economy grew 6.9% last year,
beating analyst expectations.
China's performance was helped by government stimulus
and an improving environment for global trade.
It's the first time since 2010 that China's official growth rate
has bested the prior year. The economy grew 6.7% in 2016.
Chinese stocks gained Thursday, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng hitting a record high.
The Shanghai Composite rose to its highest level in over two years.

U.S. government shutdown risk:
House Republican leaders are moving toward a vote Thursday to avoid a government shutdown.
But it's unclear if GOP leaders have enough support to keep the government open.
If Congress doesn't send a bill to the president approving more money by midnight on Friday,
most federal agencies will be forced to stop operations.
A shutdown could derail a major market rally.

U.S. stock futures were soft ahead of the open.
The Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all hit record highs on Wednesday.
The Dow soared by 323 points yesterday to close above 26,000 for the first time.

Earnings: Morgan Stanley (MS) will release earnings before the open,
with American Express (AXP) and IBM (IBM) following after markets close.
Investors will be watching earning to see how companies assess new U.S. tax rules.
IBM, which has made a lot of money abroad, could report a big one-time hit because
of a new tax on overseas earnings.
American companies with global operations are expected to pay hundreds of billions
of dollars on the overseas profits they've amassed in recent decades.

But most companies say the tax changes are a good thing in the long run.
Apple (AAPL) said Wednesday it would make a $38 billion tax payment
in relation to new tax rules.

DOW -97.84 Thursday(+)

Cnn Money:

Shutdown looms:
There is a very real possibility that the United States
government will be forced to shut down at midnight.

But investors don't appear to be too worried.

House Republicans approved a bill late Thursday that would keep the U.S. government
running until mid-February. But Democrats in the Senate, some of whose support is needed
to pass the measure, appear poised to take a stand.
Democrats, who have been frustrated by a lack of progress on immigration,
are hoping to extract concessions in return for their votes.

Market reaction has so far been muted. U.S. stock futures were steady on Friday,
and most global markets posted gains.

A brief government shutdown is not expected to have a large economic impact.
But it could hurt investor, consumer and business confidence because it signals
a major breakdown in the political process.

"The economic damage of a shutdown should be limited,
if the shutdown is relatively short lived ...
A longer slowdown would start to do more serious damage,"
warned Paul Donovan, global chief economist at UBS Wealth Management.

Stocks to watch --
IBM, American Express: Shares in IBM (IBM) and American Express (AXP)
could stumble on Friday.

IBM reported its first sales increase in 22 quarters after the market closed on Thursday.
Sales grew 1% last quarter, but that might not be enough to convince investors that IBM
has turned its fortunes around. Shares were down by as much as 4% after the market closed on Thursday.

American Express shares were also lower in extended trading
after the firm posted its first net loss since 1992.
The company said the recent tax code overhaul was the culprit.
American Express estimates that it will face a $2.6 billion "charge"
because of the new law, most of which will go toward a tax on profits earned overseas.

Hotels halted: Trading in Wanda Hotel Development was halted in Hong Kong,
and investors are waiting for news about the potential sale of a business unit.

Wang Jianlin, who heads up the Wanda real estate and entertainment empire,
is among China's richest men.
Wanda has been scaling back parts of its sprawling operations after coming
under heightened scrutiny by Chinese authorities last year.

Earnings: SunTrust Banks (STI) and Schlumberger (SLB)
will release earnings before the open.

Cnn Money:

Government shutdown continues:
The U.S. government shutdown enters its third day on Monday, with the
Senate scheduled to vote at noon on a bill to reopen it for three weeks.
However, it is still unclear whether the proposal will garner enough support
from Democrats to pass.

While a brief shutdown won't have a significant economic impact,
a prolonged disruption to government services could result in a hit.
The last government shutdown -- which lasted more than two weeks in October 2013 --
cost an estimated $20 billion, according to an estimate from Moody's Analytics.

In Germany, months of political deadlock were broken Sunday when the
center-left Social Democrats voted to begin formal coalition talks
with Chancellor Angela Merkel's center-right party, a move that brings
a new Merkel-led administration closer to reality.

U.S. stock futures dipped on Monday, while Asian markets ended
marginally higher and European markets were mixed.

Netflix reports earnings: The online streaming giant will release earnings
for the quarter ended December after the close on Monday, revealing the
impact of its most recent increase in subscription prices. Netflix (NFLX) raised
the cost of its standard monthly subscription by $1 and the cost of its premium
subscription by $2 in early October.
The company behind hit shows like "The Crown," "Stranger Things" and "House of Cards,"
added over 5 million new subscribers in the previous quarter and expects to add another
6 million in the three months to December.
It plans to spend $8 billion on shows and movies in 2018.
Netflix's stock price has gone up more than 60% over the past year.

Logitech Intl SA (LOGI) and TD Ameritrade (AMTD) are also set to report earnings after the close,
while Halliburton (HAL) and Wynn Resorts (WYNN) plan to release earnings before the open Monday.

Pharma takeover: Sanofi (GCVRZ) announced a deal to buy biotech firm Bioverativ (BIVV) for $11.6 billion.
The French pharmaceutical group will pay $105 in cash for each share of Bioverativ, which specializes in
treatments of hemophilia and other rare blood disorders.

The agreed offer represents a 64% premium over Bioverativ's closing price on Friday.

"Together, we have a great opportunity to bring innovative medicines to patients worldwide,"
Sanofi CEO Olivier Brandicourt said in a statement.

Sanofi shares dropped more than 3% in in Paris on Monday morning.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both ended the week at record highs,
while the Dow gained 54 points to close near an all-time high.

GE (GESLX), one of America's most iconic companies,
had its worst week since March 2009 after plunging 13%.
The firm will report its latest earnings on Wednesday.

Cnn Money:

Trump's new tariffs:
President Trump just made it more expensive to import solar panels
and some washing machines into the United States.
The Trump administration on Monday announced new tariffs of 30% on solar panels
and taxes on large residential washing machines starting from 20% and going up to 50%.
"The President's action makes clear again that the Trump Administration will always defend
American workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses," U.S. Trade Representative
Robert Lighthizer said in a statement.
China, the world's biggest supplier of solar panels, slammed what it described as "an abuse"
of trade rules. The move "aggravates the global trade environment," China's Ministry of Commerce said.
South Korea, whose electronics companies LG (LPL) and Samsung (SSNLF)
are among the top suppliers of washing machines to the U.S., said it
would file a complaint with the World Trade Organization.
LG Electronics saw its stock price plunge as much as 5% Tuesday morning in Asia,
before recovering later in the day. Samsung remained largely unaffected, gaining
almost 2% during the Asia day.
Whirlpool (WHR), meanwhile, will be one stock to watch when markets open on Tuesday.
The U.S. company, which filed a petition in 2011 alleging dumping by the Korean firms,
stands to gain from the new tariffs.

NAFTA negotiations:
The tariffs come as the Trump administration prepares for another big trade negotiation.
Officials from the U.S., Canada and Mexico will meet in Montreal on Tuesday for a sixth
round of talks on NAFTA.
The previous five rounds have seen little progress on reworking the 24-year old free
trade agreement, and Trump has repeatedly threatened to pull out of it altogether if
he doesn't get the deal he wants.
Top of his wish list? Cars. Trump wants to change how and where automobiles are made
in North America, giving more work to U.S. manufacturers, but his proposals have been
described by Mexican and Canadian officials as "unacceptable" and "extreme."
With seven rounds of talks scheduled in total, and key elections taking place in Mexico
and the U.S. this year, time is running out.

Fox-Sky hurdle: A U.K. regulator on Tuesday recommended that the country's government
block the proposed takeover of Sky (SKYAY) by 21st Century Fox (FOX).
The deal would likely be "against the public interest,"
the Competition and Markets Authority said, because it would give 21st Century Fox
chairman Rupert Murdoch too much control over British media.
The authority proposed some changes to the deal to mitigate those concerns,
which include spinning off Sky News.
Sky shares rose more than 2% in London Tuesday morning.

Netflix is red hot: Netflix stock is expected to open nearly 9% higher on Tuesday,
according to FactSet, a day after the company said it added a record 8 million subscribers
in the last quarter of 2017.
The growth in subscribers came despite a recent price hike, and the resulting stock surge
could see its market capitalization top $100 billion for the first time.

Davos kicks off:
The gathering of the global political and business elite begins Tuesday,
with a big speech from India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
President Trump is scheduled to arrive at the Swiss mountain resort later in the week.
The U.S. president's attendance at the World Economic Forum annual meeting had been
in doubt because of the government shutdown.

More market highs: The Dow Jones industrial average continued its push into
uncharted territory, jumping 143 points to another record high after the
U.S. Senate reached a deal to end the three-day government shutdown.
The Nasdaq also hit an all-time high on Monday, gaining 1%, while the S&P 500 was up 0.8%.

U.S. stock futures edged upwards, while European markets are up in early trading
and Asian markets ended Tuesday significantly higher.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Kimberly-Clark (KMB), Procter & Gamble (PG)
and Verizon (VZ) plan to release earnings before the open Tuesday,
while Texas Instruments (TXN) and United Continental (UAL) are set
to release earnings after the close.

Dow Futures currently -14.00

Toys "R" Us is shutting stores: More than 180 of them, in fact, accounting for about a fifth of its U.S. retail outlets.
The decision comes four months after the toy seller filed for bankruptcy, struggling with $5 billion of debt in the face
of competition from rivals like Walmart (WMT) and Amazon (AMZN).
The store closures, which will begin next month and are expected to be completed by April, will give Toys "R" Us "
the best chance to emerge from our bankruptcy proceedings as a more viable and competitive company," CEO Dave Brandon said.
The company's stores outside the U.S. -- more than 700 of them -- are unaffected.

Day 2 in Davos:
The World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos enters its second full day, with French President Emmanuel Macron
and German Chancellor Angela Merkel scheduled to address the gathering of the world's elite.
But virtually everyone is talking about another attendee -- President Trump, who is scheduled to speak Friday.
His team has already landed in the Swiss mountain resort, with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin
and Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross talking tax, trade and the dollar early Wednesday.
Google (GOOGL) CEO Sundar Pichai and Alibaba (BABA) founder Jack Ma will also take the stage,
as will U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry.

GE earnings: General Electric is set to release earnings before the open Wednesday.
The company has just experienced its worst week on the stock market since the Great Recession,
and has lost 45% of its value since President Trump was elected.

Comcast (CCZ), Baker Hughes, (BHGE) Progressive (PGR) and Royal Caribbean (RCL) will also report earnings before the open,
while Ford (F), Ethan Allen (ETH) and Las Vegas Sands (LVS) will do so after the close.
Also reporting earnings after the close: Whirlpool (WHR). The U.S. home appliance maker gained around 3% on Tuesday,
after the Trump administration announced new tariffs on washing machines imported into the country.

Global market overview:
U.S. stock futures were steady, after the Dow Jones industrial average closed slightly lower on Tuesday
while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq hit new record highs.
Netflix surged 10% to a record high on Tuesday after reporting record new subscriber numbers,
joining the coveted $100 billion club in the process.
European markets edged lower in early trading, while Asian markets ended the day mixed.

The weekly report on U.S. crude inventories will be published at 10:30 a.m. ET.
U.S. crude oil futures were holding steady around $64.45 per barrel.

Cnn Money:

Airlines nosedive: Fears of a looming price war have hit U.S. airline stocks hard.

United Airlines (UAL), which announced that it would do more to compete with budget carriers,
saw its stock drop more than 11% on Wednesday. Shares of rivals such as American Airlines (AAL)
and Southwest (LUV) dropped 6% and almost 5% respectively, while low-cost airline JetBlue Airways (
JBLU) fell more than 2%.
American, JetBlue, Alaska Air and Southwest Air all plan to release earnings before the open on Thursday.
Other companies doing so include Caterpillar (CAT), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Raytheon (RTN), 3M (MMM)
and Union Pacific (UNP).
E*TRADE (ETFC), Intel (INTC), Starbucks (SBUX) and Western Digital (WDC) are set to release earnings after the close.

Davos awaits Trump: President Trump landed in Zurich, Switzerland early Thursday,
and will fly on to the mountain resort town of Davos for the World Economic Forum's annual summit.
Trump is set to address the meeting on Friday to push his "America First" agenda. His attendance --
the first by a U.S. president in nearly two decades -- has been the talk of the town all week.
World leaders including Germany's Angela Merkel and France's Emmanuel Macron warned against rising
protectionism and isolation on Wednesday.
Trump's team have hit the ground running. Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin told reporters that the
Trump administration is prepared
to negotiate an "attractive" trade deal with the U.K. after it leaves the European Union.
U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is set to address the summit on Thursday.

U.S. stock futures were steady, while European markets had a mixed opening and Asian markets ended lower.

Bitcoin bounces:
Bitcoin continued its gradual rise in Asia on Thursday, with the price holding steady above $11,000 after briefly dipping
below $10,000 a day earlier, according to Coindesk.
That's still a far cry from its peak of nearly $20,000 last year -- regulatory threats and warnings in big markets like China
and South Korea contributed to a drop of almost 20% in the first weeks of 2018.
Stripe, a digital payments company, said Wednesday that it will soon stop accepting bitcoin transactions,
while Axel Weber, chairman of Swiss bank UBS, said he was concerned more regulation could cause a "massive" price drop.

DOW +140.67 Thursday(+)

Cnn Money:

Dollar dissonance: The U.S. dollar fell against other major currencies early Friday
before recovering slightly.
It erased most of a 1% jump notched up after President Trump told CNBC on Thursday
that the dollar would get "stronger and stronger."
Trump was speaking in the Swiss town of Davos, where he is attending
the World Economic Forum's annual summit.
His remarks came just a day after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said
a weaker dollar is "good for trade," sending the currency to its lowest level since 2014.

Mnuchin tried to clarify his stance on Thursday, saying the U.S. wasn't concerned
with where the dollar was in the short term.
"In the long term, the dollar's strength reflects the U.S. economy," he added.
Trump will address the annual gathering of the global elite on Friday at 8:00 a.m. ET,
when he is expected to tout the benefits of his "America First" agenda.

U.S. GDP: Trump will be hoping for some good economic news from back home,
when the U.S. reveals its first estimates of gross domestic product growth for
the fourth quarter. The data is due at 8:30 a.m. ET.

The U.S. economy grew at an annual rate of about 3% in the previous two quarters,
and a third consecutive quarter at that pace would be a big boost for Trump
as he begins his second year in office.

U.S. stock futures were all slightly up on Friday.

European markets also edged upwards in early trading, while Asian markets ended the week mixed.
Walmart's e-book push: The retailer has been locked in an intense battle with Amazon (AMZN),
and is now taking on its popular e-book business.

Walmart (WMT) said late Thursday that it will start selling e-books and audiobooks online
later this year.
The company is partnering up with Amazon's Japanese competitor, Rakuten.
The two firms also plan to set up an online grocery platform in Japan, an industry
where Amazon is expanding.

Walmart will sell Rakuten's Kobo e-book readers -- devices similar to Amazon's hugely popular Kindle
--to customers in the United States.

Earnings: Colgate-Palmolive (CL) and Honeywell (HON) plan to release earning before the open Friday.

Dow Futures currently +57.00

Going with UP on Friday,

Permanence, perseverance and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements and impossibilities:
It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak.

Thomas Carlyle

“Good habits are important, but it’s often our bad habits that prevent us from reaching our full potential.
You can have all the good habits in the world, but if you keep doing the bad habits alongside the good ones,
you’ll struggle to reach your goals. Think of it this way: you’re only as good as your worst habits.”
