Catalonia calls time out: Investors are welcoming a decision by Catalonia's separatists
to postpone a formal declaration of independence from Spain.
Spain's benchmark stock index shot up 1.5% on Wednesday and the euro was trading higher.
Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont backed away from the cliff edge on Tuesday, choosing to
put an independence declaration on hold and instead pursue dialogue with the central government
in Madrid.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy called for an extraordinary meeting of his cabinet on Wednesday.

NAFTA talks:
Round four of talks to renegotiate NAFTA will begin in Washington on Wednesday.
The Trump administration is trying to redraft parts of the free trade agreement with
Canada and Mexico that it believes are unfair.
A new deal is supposed to be done by the end of 2017,
but little progress on thorny issues has been reported.

Airlines fly high:
Delta Air Lines (DAL) will report earnings before the opening bell.
Its competitors United Continental (UAL) and American Airlines (AAL)
both upgraded their outlooks on Tuesday. Their shares were among the
biggest risers on the market.
Airlines have benefited from low fuel prices,
but competition in the U.S. market is intense.

Global market overview: U.S. stock futures were edging lower.
Markets in Europe and Asia were mixed.
Earnings and companies: Asset manager BlackRock (BLK) is set to
release its earnings report before the opening bell.

Shares in Kobe Steel (KBSTY), a Japanese company that has admitted to faking data about its products,
dropped another 17% in Tokyo. The scandal has now wiped away more than a third of the firm's market
value.

Big banks report: Wall Street will get earnings from JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Citigroup (C) before the opening bell.
JPMorgan is expected to cement its position as the most profitable U.S. bank.Citi is also set to make investors happy.
For the first time since 2007, the bank's market value has topped $200 billion --
thanks to a 52% surge in its stock price since President Trump's election.

Finance leaders meet: The annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank starts on Thursday.
U.S. tax reform, the economic crisis in Venezuela and nuclear threats from North Korea will be high on the agenda.
The question of increasing capital for the World Bank's main lending arm is likely to become a sticking point.
The majority of the bank's 189 member countries support the move.
But the U.S. -- its largest shareholder -- could veto the decision.

NAFTA talks: The fourth round of NAFTA negotiations are also underway in Washington.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tried Wednesday to convince Trump of the benefits
of the free trade agreement during at a meeting in the White House.
Trump has repeatedly called NAFTA the worst trade deal in U.S. history.
Trump doesn't appear to be buying Trudeau's message. He said that if Mexico,
Canada and the U.S. can't renegotiate the deal, "it'll be terminated and that will be fine."

Global market overview: U.S. stock futures were lower early on Thursday.

Markets in Europe and Asia were mixed.

Tokyo's Nikkei reached its highest level in more than two decades on Thursday.
Japanese stocks have been boosted by the cheap yen, low corporate taxes and
expectations that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will remain in power.

U.S. markets hit more record highs on Wednesday.

Companies and economics: Domino's Pizza (DPZ) is set to release earnings before the open.

General Electric (GE) shares fell 1% to their lowest level in four years on Wednesday.
A series of management shake-ups have failed to restore investor confidence in the industrial giant.

DOW -31.88 Thursday(-)

Cnn Money:

Bank bonanza: Earnings season is now in full swing,
with investors hearing from three big American banks on Friday.
Bank of America (BAC), PNC (PNC) and Wells Fargo (WFC) are all set to publish their quarterly results before the open.
Wells Fargo is expected to report healthy profits, but CEO Tim Sloan is likely to face tough questions about the bank's
account fraud scandal. The controversy has spooked investors: while its competitors' shares have posted double digits
gains this year, Wells Fargo has remained flat.

It's a different story at Bank of America, where shares topped $26 last week for the first time since the financial crisis.

On Thursday, JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and Citigroup (C) both beat analyst expectations for their earnings.

Trump acts on health care: President Trump has taken a first step towards dismantling Obamacare by signing an executive order.
The order broadly tasks the administration with developing policies to increase health care competition and choice in order to
improve the quality of health care and lower prices.
However, it could also destabilize Obamacare by siphoning out younger and healthier Americans from health care exchanges.

Company news: Shares in 21st Century Fox (FOX) were poised to drop at the open after a shareholder group called for an overhaul
of the company's board following recent sexual
and racial harassment scandals at Fox News.

Samsung (SSNLF) expects its profits in the quarter ended September to jump by almost 300% over the same period in 2016.
The improvement was driven by strong sales from Samsung's semiconductor business, which supplies memory chips
for rival phone makers including Apple (AAPL).

Global market overview: U.S. stock futures were flat.
European markets opened mixed, while Asian markets ended the session mostly higher.

Netflix earnings: Netflix (NFLX, Tech30) will report its third quarter earnings after the closing bell.
Investors will be watching to see if the streaming giant can match its impressive user growth of 5 million accounts in the second quarter.
Netflix now has over 100 million customers.
JPMorgan raised its estimates for the stock on Friday, citing recent price hikes and a new partnership with T-Mobile (TMUS).
Netflix shares were 1.3% higher in premarket trading.

Catalan confusion: The president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, failed to clarify Monday whether his administration had
officially declared independence from Spain.
Madrid had set a deadline of 10 a.m. local time for the Catalan government to say definitively whether it was breaking away
following a referendum.Puigdemont instead asked for two months of dialogue over the status of the wealthy region in northwest Spain.
Investors have been unsettled by the political crisis. Spain's benchmark stock index was trading lower on Monday and the euro
weakened 0.3% against the dollar.
Spain's prime minister has warned that he will dissolve the Catalan administration
and order new elections if the region's status is not clarified.

Global market overview: U.S. stock futures were slightly higher.
Markets in Europe and Asia were mixed.
Oil prices advanced 1.4% amid rising tensions in northern Iraq.
Iraqi troops are advancing on the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, which is controlled by Kurdish forces.
The U.S. has cautioned both sides to avoid escalation.

Another day, another stocks record: The Nasdaq gained 0.2% on Friday to close at fresh high.
The index has climbed almost 23% this year.

Earnings and economics: Sonic (SONC) is set to release earnings after the closing bell.

DOW +85.24 Monday(+)

Airbus deal:
Shares in Airbus (EADSF) opened more than 3% higher on Monday,
hours after the European aerospace company announced it was taking
control of Bombardier's embattled C Series airliner program.
The C Series had come under attack this year from rival Boeing (BA),
which alleged Bombardier (BDRAF) was selling the jet at "absurdly low prices."
The U.S. Department of Commerce has preliminarily levied a 300% tariff on the plane's imports,
setting up a diplomatic row that has drawn in the Canadian and U.K. governments.
By assembling the C Series at its plant in Alabama, Airbus could circumvent those tariffs.

Dow 23,000 watch: U.S. stock futures were flat early Tuesday, after markets closed at yet
another record high on Monday.
The Dow Jones industrial average is now just 53 points away from reaching a new milestone of 23,000 points.
The index was up 0.4% Monday, having climbed roughly 25% since President Trump's election last November.
The array of stock markets records suggest investors remain excited about Trump's efforts to slash corporate taxes
-- despite the plan hitting roadblocks in the Congress.

More Brexit pain: Inflation in the U.K. spiked to 3% in September, according to official data.
The surge in prices -- which are rising faster than paychecks -- is largely due to the slump in the value of the
pound in the aftermath of the Brexit referendum.
Investors are getting very nervous about the uncertainty surrounding the future trading relationship
between the U.K. and EU after Brexit talks hit deadlock last week.
British Prime Minister Theresa May met European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in
Brussels Monday in an attempt to accelerate talks. There was no sign of the meeting
resulting in a breakthrough.
Bank of England Governor Mark Carney will testify in the U.K. parliament on Tuesday and investors
will be watching for any hints on when the bank plans to raise interest rates.

Oil prices edged higher on Tuesday because of tensions in the Middle East.
Iraqi security forces took control of the strategic city of Kirkuk, driving
hundreds of families from the oil-rich territory that had been under Kurdish
control for more than two years, security sources and witnesses told CNN.

Stock market movers: Shares in Netflix (NFLX) were higher in extended trading after
its results beat analysts' estimates on Monday.
The company added more than 5 million new subscribers in the third quarter.
It now has 109 million customers, up from 86 million in the same quarter a year ago.
Netflix also said it would spend $8 billion on shows and movies next year.
Shares in Credit Suiss (CSGKF)were 2% higher early on Tuesday after reports suggested
the Swiss bank is being targeted by activist investors seeking to break the bank up into
several separate companies.

Companies and economics: Goldman Sachs (GS), Harley-Davidson (HOG), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ),
Morgan Stanley (MS) and UnitedHealth (UNH) plan to release earnings before the open on Tuesday.
IBM (IBM, Tech30) will follow after the closing bell.

Dow 23,000: The Dow Jones industrial average briefly eclipsed the 23,000 point barrier on Tuesday.
The index, which has added roughly 25% since President Trump was elected, closed at a new record
of 22,997. The S&P 500 increased 0.1% and the Nasdaq ended the session flat.
There could be more gains on Wednesday: U.S. stock futures were edging higher ahead of the opening bell.

China's economic vision: China's leaders are gathered in Beijing this week for the National Congress of
the ruling Communist Party, an event that takes place just twice a decade.
For President Xi Jinping, the summit is a chance to tighten his already
strong grip on power. During his first five-year term, he made it clear
that the Party's interests take precedence over market forces.
On Wednesday, Xi stressed in a major speech that China must continue
with "national rejuvenation" on its own terms and not "mechanically copy the political systems of other countries."
While the economy has grown at an impressive rate, experts say that Xi's government has failed to move quickly
enough to deal with soaring debt and bloated state-run companies.

Companies and economics: U.S. Bancorp (USB) will release earnings
before the U.S. open. American Express (AXP), eBay (EBAY), Kinder Morgan (KMI) and Sallie Mae (SLM)
will follow after the closing bell.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has accused mining giant Rio Tinto (RIO) and two former executives
of misleading investors over the value of a coal mine in Mozambique.
Rio Tinto said in a statement that it "intends to vigorously defend itself against these allegations."

Stock market movers: IBM (IBM) shot up 5% in extended trading after
reporting strong earnings on Tuesday.

DOW +159.33 Wednesday(+)

Cnn Money:

Chaos in Spain:
Another major dose of political uncertainty has unnerved investors in Spain.
The central government in Madrid said Thursday that it will move to impose
direct rule on the wealthy region of Catalonia, which has been considering
whether to declare independence.
It's the latest in a series of confrontations to result from a controversial independence
referendum held earlier this month in the restive region.
Catalan President Carles Puigdemont says he will formally break
with Spain if the central government refuses to engage in talks.
The benchmark Spanish stock index was roughly 1% lower.
The euro was volatile.

Brexit crunch time: European Union leaders are expected to discuss Iran, North Korea
and Brexit at a summit in Brussels.
British Prime Minister Theresa May will try to push for progress in Brexit negotiations.
The talks have deadlocked and the clock is ticking -- the U.K. is set to leave the EU in March 2019.
Businesses and economists have warned that crashing out of the bloc would have grave
consequences for Britain's economy.

China slows: The world's second largest economy grew 6.8% in the third quarter compared
with the same period in 2016, according to official data.
That is slightly lower growth than the 6.9% it posted in the first two quarters of 2017.
China's target for annual economic growth this year is 6.5% or higher, so the country
is comfortably on track to meet that.

Global market overview: U.S. stock futures were lower.
European markets opened in negative territory,
while Asian markets ended their session mixed.

Stock market movers: Adobe (ADBE) shares were higher in extended trading as investors
cheered the company's optimistic outlook.
eBay (EBAY) shares were pointed lower after issuing an outlook that failed to meet expectations.
Nestle (NSRGF) shares, which trade in Switzerland, were lower after the company reported its quarterly earnings.

Earnings: Blackstone (BX), Philip Morris (PM) and Verizon (VZ) will release earnings before the open,
while Del Taco (TACO), E*TRADE (ETFC) and PayPal (PYPL) will follow after the closing bell.

DOW +7.30 Thursday(-)

Cnn Money:

GE in the spotlight: General Electric (GE) is set to report its latest results
before the opening bell.
The company, once a reliable symbol of American success, is in turmoil.
Its shares have dropped 25% this year while the wider market has boomed
and the economy has strengthened.
Jeff Immelt stepped down as CEO this summer, and a wide management shakeup
has so far failed to impress investors.
The new CEO, John Flannery, will likely face questions about his vision
for stabilizing the company on Friday. GE's free cash flow, a key metric
of financial health, has declined for six straight years.

Japan election: Shinzo Abe is hoping to secure another term as prime minister in
national elections on Sunday.
Japan's economic growth has revved up over the past few quarters and business confidence
is now at its highest level in a decade, but there are still plenty of problems facing the world's
third biggest economy. The country is heavily indebted, wage growth is anemic and Japan Inc.
has been hit by a series of scandals.
The latest snafu erupted earlier this month when Kobe Steel admitting to falsifying data.
Other stumbles included Takata's deadly airbags, Mitsubishi Motors' fudged fuel-efficiency tests
and Toshiba's damaging debacles over its accounting and nuclear power business.

May in Brussels: The British pound was under pressure as European Union leaders met in Brussels.
British Prime Minister Theresa May is attempting to use the summit as an opportunity to achieve a
breakthrough in stalled Brexit talks.
Investors fear Britain could crash out of the EU without a deal, an event
that would have profound implications for the country's economy.

Global market overview: U.S. stock futures were pointing up
European markets opened higher, following the trend set by stocks in Asia.

Earnings and economics:
Honeywell (HON) and Procter & Gamble (PG) will release earnings before the open.

Shares in Volvo (VOLAF) were almost 7% higher after the automaker reported healthy
sales and an optimistic outlook.

Swiss Re (SSREF), one of the world's biggest reinsurers, said it expects its losses from hurricanes Harvey,
Irma and Maria and earthquakes in Mexico to total $3.6 billion.

The Czech Republic is holding elections on Friday and Saturday.
It's the latest country in Europe to see a spike in anti-EU sentiment despite having a relatively strong economy.

Investors will also be monitoring developments in Catalonia, where the
separatist regional government remains locked in a political conflict with Madrid.

The S&P 500 on Monday broke its previous record of the number of days without a 3% drawdown.
As it's continued to make new highs, it has broken records of other percent-move sizes.
These illustrate the rock-bottom volatility that has characterized stocks this year and is showing
few signs of rising anytime soon.
2017 could go down as one of the most boring years ever for the stock market.

Sure, the S&P 500 has closed at record highs 66 times this year, the most since the mid 1990s.

But volatility has remained historically low. And on Monday, the S&P 500 completed its longest
streak ever without a 3% intraday drawdown. At the close, it overtook the previous record of
241 days set in 1996.

Here are three other stats that illustrate the market’s lull, via LPL Financial:

As of Friday, the S&P 500 had gone 33 straight days without a 0.5% drop, the longest streak since 1995.
The S&P 500 has fallen by 1% or more in a single day only four times this year, the fewest for a full year since 1964.
Its average daily close on an absolute basis has been 0.3% this year, the lowest since 1965.

-Hannah Lee

Life is like a hot bath. It feels good while you’re in it,
but the longer you stay in, the more wrinkled you get.

Most of the problems in life are because of two reasons:
we act without thinking or we keep thinking without acting.

DOW Dow +168.42 Friday(+)

Cnn Monday:
Power play in Beijing:
The new lineup for the Chinese Communist Party's all-powerful Politburo Standing Committee
was unveiled Wednesday. The key takeaway? It does not feature a heir apparent to Chinese
President Xi Jinping.
Analysts say that Xi has managed to tighten his already strong grip on power, and predict he will
continue dominate the country's politics for decades to come.
"There are few signs that Xi plans to use his increased power to resolve China's key structural problems,"
said Julian Evans-Pritchard, China economist at Capital Economics.
"The only silver lining is today's promotion of key officials that favor greater reform, which offers a
modicum of hope that policy could shift in a more liberal direction in future," he added.
Chinese stocks were higher on Wednesday.

U.K. GDP: Britain's economy expanded by 0.4% in the three months ended September
compared to the previous quarter.
That's better than economists expected, and a notch faster than the 0.3% rate posted
in both the first and second quarters.
The pound gained 0.3% against the dollar following the release.

Ransomware attack:
The U.S. government has issued a warning about a new ransomware attack that has spread through
Russia and Ukraine and into other countries.
Cybersecurity experts said the ransomware -- which posed as an Adobe update before locking down
computers and demanding money for people to get their files back --
targeted Russian media companies and Ukrainian transportation systems.
It has also been detected in countries including the U.S., Germany and Japan.

Market overview: U.S. stock futures were lower.
European markets opened mostly higher, following the upward trend set in Asia.

Real incomes have been flat to down slightly for the average household in the bottom 60%
since 1980 (while they have been up for the top 40%).

Those in the top 40% now have on average 10 times as much wealth as those in the bottom 60%.
That is up from six times as much in 1980.

Only about a third of the bottom 60% saves any of its income (in cash or financial assets)
.
Only about a third of families in the bottom 60% have retirement savings accounts—
e.g., pensions, 401(k)s—which average less than $20,000.

For those in the bottom 60%, premature deaths are up by about 20% since 2000.
The biggest contributors to that change are an increase in deaths by drugs/poisoning
(up two times since 2000) and an increase in suicides (up over 50% since 2000).

The top 40% spend four times more on education than the bottom 60%.

The average household income for main income earners without a college degree is
half that of the average college graduate.

Since 1980, divorce rates have more than doubled among middle-aged whites
without college degrees, from 11% to 23%.

The number of prime-age white men without college degrees not in the labor force
has increased from 7% to 15% since 1980.

DOW +70.40 Thursday(+)

Cnn Monday:

Energy giants: Investors will get earnings from U.S. oil heavyweights ExxonMobil and Chevron before the opening bell.
Big Oil, which has been under pressure from low crude prices,
has largely missed out on this year's market rally. ExxonMobil (XOM) shares have fallen by about 8% in 2017, while Chevron (CVX) has inched up by less than 1%.
A Harvard study published in August found that Exxon "misled the public" on climate change for nearly 40 years.
The same month, a number of Exxon's refineries went offline because of Hurricane Harvey.
In September, San Francisco and Oakland filed lawsuits demanding that Exxon, Chevron and other companies pay billions to protect the coastal cities from rising sea levels.
The following week, Chevron announced that its CEO would step down next year.

Other companies reporting results Friday morning include Goodyear Tire (GT) and Merck (MRK).
Stock market movers: Shares in Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) are shooting higher premarket after the firms reported better-than-expected profits.

Mattel (MAT), Baidu (BIDU) and Expedia (EXPE) shares are expected to slump.
Mattel (MAT) announced it's suspending its quarterly dividend in order to free up cash. Its global sales have dropped 13%.

Aetna (AET) shares spiked 12% late on Thursday after the Wall Street Journal reported that it's in talks to be purchased by CVS Health (CVS). Investors will be keeping an eye on any further developments. Both companies declined to comment.

Things fall apart:
Swiss chemicals giant Clariant (CLZNY) and its U.S. rival Hunstman (HUN) have decided to abandon their $20 billion merger following a shareholder revolt.
The companies said in a joint statement that they would not join forces because of doubts that Clariant would get the backing of enough investors to push the deal through.
The deal's termination marks a major win for top Clariant shareholder White Tale Holdings -- a partnership between hedge funds Corvex and 40 North -- that had opposed the merger.

Economy check-up:
Analysts expect slowed growth than the (US GDP) annual rate of 3.1% posted in the second quarter.

Global market overview: U.S. stock futures were higher.
European markets posted gains in early trading.
Japan's Nikkei posted a 1.2% increase to lead most Asian markets higher.

DOW Dow +32.13 Friday(+)

Cnn Money:

Standoff in Catalonia:
Spain's benchmark stock index bucked the broader trend in Europe on Monday,
gaining 1.6% after Madrid moved to quash a separatist movement in the wealthy region of Catalonia.
Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy sacked Catalonia's president and dissolved its parliament on
Friday after lawmakers in the autonomous region voted to declare independence.
On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of anti-independence protesters rallied in the regional capital of Barcelona.
What happens next is unclear, but more volatility appears likely.

Mueller moves? Robert Mueller, who was appointed in May to lead the investigation into Russian meddling
in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, may deliver a political bombshell on Monday.
Sources briefed on the matter told CNN that a federal grand jury in Washington has approved the first
charges in the investigation led by the former FBI director.
Plans were prepared for anyone charged to be taken into custody as soon as Monday, the sources said.
President Trump and his team deny any wrongdoing.

Fed tease:
Trump has tweeted that he is preparing to name his pick to lead the U.S. Federal Reserve.
"People are anxiously awaiting my decision as to who the next head of the Fed will be," he said.
There has been speculation for weeks about whether Trump would renominate current Fed chair
Janet Yellen to another four-year term. Two sources told CNN on Saturday that the president is
likely to instead name Jerome Powell.
Powell, a Republican, has been a governor on the Fed's board since 2012 and was assigned to
lead the bank's Wall Street oversight committee in April.
Trump could still change his mind, the sources said.

Global market overview:
U.S. stock futures were lower.
European markets, with the notable exception of Spain's Ibex 35, were down in early trading.
Asian markets ended mixed.

DOW Dow -85.04 Monday(+)

Cnn Money:

Tech talks about Russia: Top executives from Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR) and Google (GOOGL)
will face questions from Congress on Tuesday afternoon over how their platforms might have
been used by Russia to meddle in U.S. politics.
The execs will testify at 2:30 p.m. ET before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee.
Facebook is expected to tell lawmakers that roughly 126 million Americans may have been exposed
to content generated on its platform by the Russian government-linked troll farm
known as the Internet Research Agency between June 2015 and August 2017.

Qualcomm gets quashed: Shares in Qualcomm (QCOM) were down about 7% premarket
following reports that Apple (AAPL) is looking to stop using the company's components
in its new iPhones and iPads.
Such are the perils faced by Apple suppliers. Earlier this year, shares in British firm
Imagination Technologies (IGNMF) fell by as much as 72% in a single day after investors
learned that Apple planned to stop licensing the firm's technology.

Big day for earnings: Wall Street will be hearing from Aetna (AET), Kellogg (K), Pfizer (PFE),
MasterCard (MA) and Under Armour (UA) before the opening bell.
Electronic Arts (EA, Tech30), Sturm Ruger (RGR) and Papa John's (PZZA) will follow after the U.S. close.

International markets are digesting updates from firms including Airbus (EADSF), BP (BP), WPP (WPPGY),
Ryanair (RYAAY), Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) and Sony (SNE).
Shares in BP (up 3.5%) and Ryanair (up nearly 6%) were the biggest movers of the bunch in Europe.

Samsung shares gained nearly 2% and hit a new record high after it reported earnings.
The company, which is attempting to get back on track following a massive corruption scandal in South Korea,
also reshuffled its management by choosing three new execs to lead key divisions.

Global market overview:
U.S. stock futures were inching up.
European markets were higher in early trading.
Asian markets weren't feeling the love, and most indexes ended the day with small losses.

DOW +28.50 Tuesday(-)

Cnn Monday:

Fed focus:
Wall Street is watching the Federal Reserve, which will release its latest
decision on interest rates and monetary policy at 2:00 p.m. ET.
Investors are expecting there will be no change to policy this time around,
but another rate increase could come in December.
"The Fed has raised rates twice since January and [there are] forecasts [for]
one more hike by the end of the year as part of a tightening cycle that began
in late 2015," wrote FxPro analysts in a daily research note.
Thursday promises to be an even bigger day for the central bank:
That's when President Trump is expected to announce his choice for Fed chair.

Stock markets roar:
It's rare to see global stocks rising in unison,
but that's the situation on Wednesday.

U.S. stock futures were pushing higher,
setting markets up for potential records.
European markets made a strong showing in early trading.
Germany's Dax index led the way with gains of roughly 1.4%.
Asian markets also ended the day in positive territory.

Taxes and tech: Republican lawmakers have delayed the release of their tax
reform bill until Thursday because they are still negotiating key provisions in the bill.
It's a setback for GOP leaders who have been focused on tax reform and
enthusiastically touted the November 1 announcement.
Investors want to see whether the Republicans are able to effectively implement
their policies, and get a sense of how any tax changes could impact the wider economy.

Meanwhile, tech firms remain in the spotlight.

At 9:30 a.m. and again at 2 p.m., top legal executives from Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR)
and Google (GOOGL) will testify before the Senate and House Intelligence Committees.
The execs are in Washington this week to answer questions on how foreign nationals used
social media in an attempt to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.
At the first hearing on Tuesday, the tech companies were pressed on their ability to prevent
bad actors from taking advantage of their platforms through ads and regular posts.

Earnings: New York Times (NYT), Estee Lauder (EL) and
SodaStream (SODA) will report earnings before the opening bell.

Tech firms including Facebook (FB, Tech30), Tesla (TSLA), Fitbit (FIT),
Yelp (YELP) and GoPro (GPRO, Tech30) will report after the closing bell.
They will be joined by a number of food and restaurant firms, including
Kraft Heinz (KHC), Shake Shack (SHAK) and Cheesecake Factory (CAKE).

Cnn Money:

New Fed chair? President Trump will announce his pick to lead
the Federal Reserve at 3 p.m. ET.
"I think you'll be extremely impressed by this person," Trump said.
Two sources have told CNN that Trump is likely to nominate Jerome Powell
to lead the central bank.
Powell has been a Fed governor since 2012 and previously served as
Treasury official under President George H.W. Bush.
If confirmed, he would replace current chairwoman Janet Yellen
when her term expires in February.
Greg Valliere, chief global strategist at Horizon Investments,
said Yellen would leave the Fed with a solid track record.
"She'll go out on top, widely praised for engineering an economic recovery
and presiding over a historic stock market rally," he said.

U.K. braces for rate hike: The Bank of England is expected
to raise interest rates for the first time in a decade.
The decision is expected at 8 a.m. ET.
Economists think the central bank will hike rates by 0.25 percentage points
in a bid to control inflation, which has shot up to 3%.
Interest rates are currently at record lows.

Tax reform unveiled:
Republican lawmakers are expected to release their tax reform bill
Thursday following a delay.
Investors want to see whether the Republicans are able to effectively
implement their policies, and get a sense of how any tax changes could
impact the wider economy.

Earnings:
Alibaba (BABA), DowDuPont (DWDP) and Yum! Brands (YUM) will report earnings
ahead of the opening bell.

Apple (AAPL), Starbucks (SBUX), CBS (CBS) and RE/MAX Holdings (RMAX)
will follow after the close.

Global market overview: U.S. stock futures were a bit soft after major
indexes touched record highs on Wednesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq each hit highs during
the trading day before losing steam.

European markets were mixed in early trading on Thursday.

DOW +81.25 Thursday (+)

Cnn Money:

Jobs, jobs, jobs:
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is publishing its October jobs report
(8:30am Eastern)
This report is considered one of the biggest economic events of the month
and is known to move markets.
Economists surveyed by CNNMoney forecast that employers added 301,000 jobs in October.
The latest numbers follow an unusually weak September, when the economy lost 33,000 jobs
because many Houston and Florida employers were closed due to heavy storms.
Economists expect that the unemployment rate will remain at 4.2%, which is what
most consider to be full employment. Even if unemployment ticks up, that might be
because the stronger labor market has prompted some unemployed
people who had stopped looking for work to resume their search.
The unemployment rate only counts people who are actively seeking a job.

Great Xpectations: Apple's (AAPL, Tech30) newest smartphone -- the $999 iPhone X --
went on sale in stores around the world Friday. And the company has high hopes that
this phone will generate big sales.
The company issued a forecast Thursday saying sales for the upcoming holiday quarter
would fall between $84 billion and $87 billion.
The projected revenue exceeded Wall Street's expectations, helping to boost Apple shares
in extended trading.
If those gains hold when the market opens, Apple would approach a $900 billion market cap.

Stock market movers -- Starbucks, Broadcom: Shares in Starbucks (SBUX) were down about 4%
premarket as investors worried about the company's future without former CEO Howard Schultz.
Starbucks on Thursday posted disappointing sales growth for the most recent quarter.
This is the second set of earnings from the company since Kevin Johnson took over a
s Starbucks' top executive in April.

Shares in Broadcom (AVGO) are getting a small lift after the semiconductor company
said it would move its legal headquarters back to the U.S. from Singapore.

CEO Hock Tan cited the new Republican tax plan as a reason to return.
Among other changes, the plan would cut the corporate tax rate to 20% from 35%.

"America is once again the best place to lead a business with a global footprint," Tan said.
However, he added that the company will move its headquarters regardless of whether the tax bill passes.

More earnings: Madison Square Garden (MSG), Moody's (MCO), Potbelly (PBPB), Scripps (SSP)
and Sotheby's (BID) are set to release earnings before the open Friday

Then Berkshire Hathaway (BRKB) plans to release earnings after the close.
It's one of the only companies that releases quarterly results on Friday afternoons.

Global market overview: The markets are quite calm right now.
U.S. stock futures were edging up. European markets were mixed in early trading.
Most Asian markets ended the day with small gains.
On the commodities side, crude oil futures are climbing to trade
around their highest levels in two years, at $55 per barrel.

DOW +22.93 Friday (+)

Cnn Money:

Saudi arrests rattle markets: Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal
has been arrested as part of an anti-corruption sweep in the kingdom.
The businessman is one of at least 17 Saudi princes and top officials
that have been detained, according to a list obtained by CNN and cited
by a senior royal court official.
Alwaleed owns stakes in companies including Apple (AAPL), Twitter (TWTR)
and Citigroup (C).
Saudi Arabia's All-Share index dropped by about 1.5% on Monday.
Crude oil spiked to $56 per barrel -- the highest level in over two years --
as investors worried about increased political uncertainty in Saudi.
But the international impact may be limited.
"There is little cause for international markets to react," said Paul Donovan, global chief economist
at UBS Wealth Management. "The moves would be relevant only if they were seen as creating instability
and threatening the oil price (unlikely) or if they were seen as prompting capital flight from Saudi
(possible, but unlikely)."

Gun stocks: Shares in gun makers Sturm Ruger (RGR) and American Outdoor Brands (AOBC),
the company formerly known as Smith & Wesson, will be closely watched on Monday following
a shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. At least 26 people were killed.
In the past, U.S. consumers who worried about stricter gun control measures purchased more
guns in the wake of mass shootings.

Trump's tax bill goes under the microscope: The U.S. House Ways and Means Committee will
begin its markup of the GOP tax plan on Monday.

As it stands now, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act would permanently lower
the corporate tax rate to 20%, increase the standard deduction for
individuals and households and eventually repeal the estate tax.

President Trump promised that a tax reform bill would be completed by Christmas.
Stock market movers -- Sprint, T-Mobile, Qualcomm, Broadcom, Cathay Pacific: Sprint (S)
and T-Mobile (TMUS) have abandoned discussions about a potential merger after weeks of
speculation. Japan's SoftBank (SFTBF) -- which already has an 83% stake in Sprint -- said Monday
that it will buy more of the stock following the collapse.

Broadcom (AVGO), a semiconductor device supplier that announced plans last week to switch its
legal headquarters back to the United States from Singapore, is reportedly preparing
a massive unsolicited bid for Qualcomm (QCOM, Tech30).

Shares in Cathay Pacific (CPCAY) dipped in Hong Kong after Qatar Airways announced a deal
to buy about 9.6% of the airline. Air China already holds a 30% stake in Cathay.

Earnings: CVS Health (CVS), Michael Kors (KORS) and Booz Allen Hamilton (BAH) are set to
release earnings before the open.

AMC Entertainment (AMC), Etsy (ETSY), GoDaddy (GDDY), Red Robin Gourmet (RRGB), TripAdvisor (TRIP),
Priceline (PCLN,) and Weight Watchers (WTW) will follow after the close.
CVS executives could be grilled based on reports that the firm
is considering buying Aetna (AET).

Etsy shareholders will want to hear how the company plans to fend off
competition from Amazon (AMZN, Tech30), which recently said it would
add a handcrafted gift section to its site.

Global market overview:
U.S. stock futures were in negative territory.
Most European markets dipped in early trading,
while Asian markets ended the day mixed.
