The most recent worries in Europe are concentrated on Spain and Italy. The yield on Spain's 10-year government bonds shot past the 6 percent mark Monday amid doubts its harsh austerity plans will be effective in reducing its debt mountain. Italy's borrowing rate rose to 5.52 percent last week. The rising yields mean those countries will have to pay more to borrow money and could force more cuts in government spending. That would hinder growth that is needed to extricate Europe from its debt morass. Alcoa Inc (NYS:AA - News) opened the earnings season with a bang, reporting a first-quarter profit on Tuesday instead of the expected loss. That positive surprise foretold a trend. Of the 32 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings so far, Thomson Reuters data showed that 75 percent - or two dozen - have beaten Wall Street's expectations. This week will start one of the busiest weeks of the quarterly earnings reporting period. About 86 companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 are expected to post results, according to Thomson Reuters Director's Report. | Yesterday, DOW was Down on disappointing earnings from IBM, Intel, Qualcom, ect. Nine out of 10 groups in the S&P 500 (SPX) retreated today as financial and technology shares had the biggest losses. Both groups are still up more than 17% this year, for the biggest gains in the benchmark index. Good earnings for the most part so far, Disappointing Initial Claims, sent futures back a bit. Hoping that the overall earnings helps the Market have a postive day.
