Default Newbie question: How do I purchase stocks? Who do you recommend?

Haven't owned stocks in ages.

I assume you people are making your stock buys thru an online source. Who do you use, and why?

Reliablity (as far as solid)? Lowest charges?

(My first time and first post on this forum - or any stocks forum).

Thanks.

Hi Scooter,

Here's a link for you.
Brokerage Links

Which Brokerage you select depends upon what you want to accomplish and how much help you prefer.
A full service will of course be more than the Discount Brokerage.
Are you a Speculator or a saving for retirement?
We like to 'guess" the Dow's daily direction. Feel free to join in. It's been a great learning experience.
We'll continue to look for companies with leading edge proprietary technology.
These are some promising areas's:

nanotechnology
RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)
VIOP
Daimond Film technology
Digital Cinema Revolution

On occasion, we will also "Speculate" on commmodities from time to time when an advantage appears.
Will continue to be bullish long term on gold.
Currently waiting to short the Market 3 to 6 months out, whenever the Federal Reserve raises the Discount rate.
Also would favor taking advantage of Covered Calls.

thanks for stopping by "Stock Talk"....the gulag of MW,wa,wa,wa...

I'd like to purchase some stocks, which I have chosen.

Can someone be more specific?

Who do you people use and why?

What's the advantage of a full service brokerage house - getting investment advice?

I was looking at brownco this am - was recommended to me.
Anyone have any opinions on it?

Thanks again, Bg.

Would that be TD Waterhouse? UK discount brokerage?

I also had Brownco recommended to me, by someone who as I recall doesn't use them but has a friend who uses them.

I'll try to find the best deal for me with one of these. Only planning to make a few very rare stock buys.

One thing I find disappointing is that Ameritrade doesn't use NETeller, and I have a feeling that none of these brokerages accept it.
That makes life more difficult. Getting funds there - especially last minute - will involve some headaches which I avoid with Neteller.

Incidentally - Ameritrade gives 30 free trades - but only if executed within the 1st 30 days of opening the account. After 30 days no more freebies.

6. Quality Executions
Scottrade ranked Highest in Overall Satisfaction by J.D. Power and Associates. One of the categories rated by customers for this survey is trade execution. Scottrade received the highest rating among our competitors in this category. This score is based on how customers rated their online investment firm on such attributes as ease of trading online, processing trades at the quote indicated when the order is placed, confirmation response time, and transaction execution time. View the ranking here: http://www.scottrade.com/JDPOWER/powercircles.asp.

Total account protection is $25,000,000, including up to $1,000,000 in cash. This coverage does not protect against the loss of the market value of securities. For anyone not looking to trade but invest you really can't beat sharebuilder.com

$3 commisions no minimum trades

Another good way for those looking to get into stocks but still somewhat new and not looking to make alot of trades would be DRIP plans. You can find companies like Home Depot that allow you to invest directly with the company, no brokers. Your dividends are automatically reinvested and it's basically a savings account with a much higher rate of return, as long as you pick the right stock that is.

I use Ameritrade and it's great, but if you're not making alot of trades you might be better off with sharebuilder or a Drip plan if the company you want to invest in has one.

Good luck cheers
