southie,

Welcome to Stock Talk,
thanks for you particiapation.
Will put GSK, BWLD, US, BID, FTK,OMPI and BBSI on our Watch List,

With the Housing Market and continued climb in oil prices,
expect the general Markets to come under quite a bit of more pressure
for quite a while.

Well be keeping an eye on BigPharma,

gl,

baz

Hi Bazanster, Thanks for the welcome.

ANother stock which has been on my watch list for a while is IRE ADR's. They're the big player over the pond in Ireland in the dreaded finance-banking sector but have gotten beat up pretty good recently, to which they;re now paying a 12+% dividend.

AM I missing something or this a screaming BUY for buy-and-hold boring types like myself?

All thoughts appreciated - this seems to good to be true.

southie,

Iīll check IRE out but itīs hard to argue with a +12% dividend.

Call me crazy, but I think it's time to fade oil

buying an EFT, HBP NYMEX Crude Oil Bear Plus ETF (HBTPF)

tries to achieve 2X the inverse of change in crude oil prices. It is down about 65% this year

Currently trading at $7.22, I'll pick up 300 shares

alright let's update the portfolio

MRK, 100 shares, $3766 - current value $3706, -1.6%
VRTX, 100 shares, $2525 - current value $3367, +33.3%
SINA, 100 shares, $5020 - current value $4165, -17.0%
HBTPF, 300 shares, $2166

overall return since 4/24: -0.6%
S&P 500 (1388.82 on 4/24): -10.4%

thanks, VRTX, you're keeping my head above water in this terribly shitty market

Bloomberg reports crude oil rebounded from its largest decline in three months after Iran test-fired a long-range missile in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran, which is the second-largest producer in OPEC said it may block the shipping lane and strike Israel as well as the U.S. Navy in the Persian Gulf if its nuclear facilities are attacked. Brent crude climbed 1.8% in at 11:15 AM in London reversing part of its 3.8% drop the pervious day. Nearly 40% of the world's traded oil supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz.

Merck Beats, But Vytorin Concerns Mount
Last Update: 22-Jul-08 09:03 ET

Pharmaceutical giant Merck (MRK 35.33) reported second quarter earnings after Monday's close that beat the consensus estimate. For the quarter, Merck reported earnings of $0.86 per share, excluding nonrecurring items, $0.03 better than the First Call consensus.

Revenues fell 1% year-over-year to $6.05 billion, but matched the consensus estimate.

Merck issued guidance for 2008 worldwide sales of its more popular drugs, including Singulair (sales between $4.4 billion and $4.6 billion), Cozaar/Hyzaar (sales between $3.5 billion and $3.7 billion), Gardasil (sales of $1.4 billion to $1.6 billion), and Fosamax (sales of $1.4 billion to $1.6 billion).

Merck's report was delayed while the company waited for results from a study of its cholesterol drug Vytorin to be released. Merck and Vytorin partner Schering-Plough (SGP 18.95) had hoped the study would provide better news after initial concerns about Vytorin's effectiveness surfaced earlier this year, but the drug failed to meet the goals of the study. Findings indicated that patients receiving Vytorin were no better off than those receiving a placebo to reduce the risks of coronary artery disease events.

Merck said that it is currently assessing the impact of the results and will not provide any guidance at this time.

closed yesterday at 9.56, up about 33% in the last month. Just about time to sell I think. Gonna wait until oil gets under $110 a barrel and then probably bail out
