07:18 ET Fresh Del Monte to acquire Country Best Produce (FDP) 23.26: Company will buy assets of Country Best Produce for $12.2 mln in cash. Country Best is processsor and packager of fruits and vegetables with sales of $100 mln in FY03 (Jun). FDP says acquisition will "strengthen our market position in two key product areas -- potatoes and onions -- while providing us with a meaningful foothold in the growing sweet corn category".
07:17 ET MPS Group reaffirms Q4 guidance, sells Manchester unit (MPS) 9.07: Company reaffirms Q4 EPS guidance of $0.03-0.05 (excluding accounting effects of Manchester transaction), vs the Reuters Research consensus of $0.04, and revenues of $265-280 mln vs an estimate of $274.6 mln. Co is selling its career transition and executive development business unit, Manchester, to Right Management Consultants (RHT) for $8 mln in cash.
07:17 ET Cepheid issued a patent on multi-target chip technology (CPHD) 7.79: Co announces that it has been issued a patent that covers the design of a sample preparation cartridge containing a microfluidic chip for extraction and purification of multiple DNA targets simultaneously. It may enable the integration of Cepheid's automated cartridge sample preparation capability with a high number of genetic targets.
07:15 ET F5 Networks and IBM sign patent cross-icensing agreement (FFIV) 24.37: Under the terms of the agreement, F5 gains access to IBM's patents relating to Application Traffic Management and IBM gains access to F5's patent portfolio. "IBM's interest in licensing our patent portfolio is a strong validation of the value F5's patents hold within the industry," comments F5' Networks' CEO. Specific terms of the cross-licensing agreement are confidential.
07:14 ET Digene announces FDA filing for chlamydia test (DIGE) 35.65: Co submits a 510(k) with the FDA for approval to use the Cytyc PreservCyt vial (used for the ThinPrep Pap Test) as a specimen collection medium for the hc2 Chlamydia (CT-ID) Test. Digene's hc2 CT-ID Test is indicated for use in women, with or without symptoms, to detect the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis DNA from cervical specimens.

07:11 ET Adaptec proposes $150 mln Convertible Senior Subordinated Notes offering (ADPT) 8.72: Adaptec intends to use a portion of the net proceeds of the intended offering to repurchase some of its outstanding 3% Convertible Subordinated Notes due 2007.
07:10 ET Fujitsu Siemens chooses Advanced Micro processor (AMD) 14.73: Company announces Fujitsu Siemens Computers' CELSIUS V810 high-end workstation will feature the AMD Opteron processor 200 Series. Fujitsu exec says "The architectural benefits of the AMD Opteron processor and the ability to run 32-bit and 64-bit applications in parallel will enable our customers to develop completely new products, reduce time to market and development costs."

Zander to succeed Christopher B. Galvin as chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola. Zander will join MOT in his new capacity effective Jan. 5, 2004.

Under the terms of the seven year deal, the league is to receive $188 million in cash and $32 million in Sirius stock, with the ability to earn warrants to buy an additional 50 million shares.

08:40 ET GTECH guidance correction, guides Y04 in line (GTK) 47.80: -- Update -- Earlier we reported that GTK guided Y04 EPS to $2.70-2.75 (ex items), vs the Reuters Research consensus of $2.89. The correct comparable consensus for Y04 (Feb) is $2.73, not $2.89.
08:39 ET Gold Oil and Dollar Summary : The capture of Saddam caused a "head-fake" yesterday as most markets reverse back in the direction of their overall trend today. The Dollar fell against a number of currencies including another record low (1.2361) against the Euro (1.2341) and a new six-year low against the Aussie. The greenback is steady against the Yen (107.54) on speculation the Bank of Japan might interfere if their currency rises too fast...Safe-haven Gold rises near 409.95 against a falling Dollar. Other metals showing strength include new multi-year highs made by Copper and Platinum...Crude Oil is little changed at 33.18 as turmoil near Iraqi pipelines continues. The US DOE will release its weekly inventory report Wednesday at 3:30pm. Supply is expected to have declined as colder temperatures had spread across the US.

12:00 ET Dow +61, Nasdaq -8, S&P +3.19: [BRIEFING.COM] Stocks opened higher on a bounce from yesterday, supported by strong economic data and a good earnings report from Oracle (ORCL 13.00 +0.30)...the economic numbers showed -0.2% for November CPI, reflecting very tame inflation....also, a very strong 0.9% jump in November Industrial Production, and a 4.5% increase in November Housing Starts to a 20-year high showed the the economy is still on a roll...yet, as the morning progressed, the recent rotation continued...the flight from momentum plays, small caps, and tech stocks continues...the Russell 2000 small cap index is down 4.34 to 530.91, a 0.8% decline which is worse than the major indices...the SOX semiconductor index is off 10.03 to 472.39, a 2.1% drop in that highly volatile index...decliners lead advancers by nearly 2 to 1, but the money isn't necessarily fleeing the market...instead, blue chip big caps stocks are benefiting...20 of the Dow 30 stocks are up, with Caterpillar (CAT 79.81 +1.29), IBM (93.13 +1.03), and United Tech (UTX 93.35 +1.80) all up more than $1...volume is light...bonds are near flat...retail stocks remain weak on concerns over holiday spending trends...
