A few more details:
The home plate is located in fair territory (if you complete the 1st and 3rd base lines, they meet at the tip of home plate).
However, even if the ball bounces BEHIND home plates...

I agree that it's a little weird to put the responsability on the defensive team. I think that it's to avoid forcing the ump to decide WHEN he has officially missed the bag. If a guy misses 1st base...
