Jets receiver buys Hambletonian hopeful

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) New York Jets receiver Wayne Chrebet is looking to score in the $1 million Hambletonian. Chrebet spent more than $100,000 earlier this week to buy Southwind Elian, a 3-year-old who is eligible to race in the Hambletonian on Aug. 7 at the Meadowlands.
Southwind Elian has three wins, a second, and a third in nine career starts. The son of Conway Hall trotted a career best of 1:55.1 on Sunday with John Campbell driving for trainer Chuck Sylvester.

"It's a thrill for Wayne to have a horse who can compete in the big races," said Kevin McDermott, who will train the colt. "We're not saying he's going to win the Hambletonian or anything, but at least we've got a shot."

The 30-year-old Chrebet has owned horses competing at the Meadowlands since 2001. He owns the Double Down Stables, based in Colts Neck.

McDermott said Chrebet paid six figures to Campbell's Juniper II LLC of River Vale and David French of Delray Beach, Fla. for the colt, who was a $75,000 yearling sale purchase.

Southwind Elian will race at in the Connors stakes in Michigan next weekend and then at the Goodtimes eliminations in Canada on June 12.

LMAO............like John Campbell and Chuck Sylvester would ever sell a horse they think has a shot to win a hambo!

note to wayne: they don't need the money.........the only reason why they are even in the game (at this stage) is to win hambos.

this horse has major issues......you got some great advice here wayne.
