Magna, Churchill announce field size restriction
by Randall Stevens, 4/1/2003
In a joint announcement today, Magna and Churchill have announced they will create company wide restrictions of field size. The new restrictions will limit all races at Magna and Churchill tracks to 6 entrants. Harry Chimp, a spokesman for Magna, said "This change is really for horse safety and for the customers. Customers always complain when their horses get bad trips and this should help prevent that. Also, this change will also allow us to run 18 races per day, letting us give the customers more of what they want." Along with the restriction, Chimp said they would be offerring a new bet, the superduperfecta, requiring the bettor to pick the complete finish of the race. The takeout of the new bet will be 76%. Don Knotts, former actor and spokesman for Churchill said, "We're just trying to give the customer what he wants. Customers love the chance to win a lot for a small investment. We did want a lower takeout, but the new bet will require the Autotote allow their software to handle bets with 6 runners at once and thus the need for the higher takeout. Its really to protect the customer." Autotote officials could not be reached for comment due to them all being on permanent vacation.
