Biffle escapes uninjured after wreck at LVMS

Greg Biffle had a lot more excitement than he expected Thursday on the final day of Goodyear tire testing in his NASCAR Nextel Cup car at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Biffle's right front tire apparently blew as he headed into the first turn of the newly paved 1.5-mile track shortly after a lunch break. He was sore but uninjured after the crash, but one of his favorite No. 16 Roush Racing Fords was destroyed.

The impact knocked the fuel pump off, and the car burst into flames. Kyle Busch wasn't far behind and was first on the scene, and the Las Vegan quickly got out of his car and helped Biffle from his.

"That was a really hard hit, and we lost a good car," Biffle said. "But I'm OK."

The drivers unofficially were clocked at speeds near 187 mph, but Biffle said that might get closer to 190 when Cup teams start qualifying in March. Kasey Kahne has the track qualifying record of 174.904 mph, set in 2004.

Thursday's incident wasn't the result that anyone wants in tire testing, but it let Goodyear know that a different front tire will be needed when all the Cup and Busch teams return in January for more testing in preparation for the March 9 to 11 NASCAR weekend.
